Simple Recipes



  1. Ants on a Log
    • Ingredients:
      • celery
      • raisins
      • peanut butter
    • Directions:
      • Fill celery with peanut butter.
      • Cut into bite-sized pieces.
      • Sprinkle with raisins.

  2. Baked Bagels
    • Ingredients:
      • 12 whole wheat bagels
      • 1 package Cream Cheese, softened
    • Directions:
      • Spread cream cheese over bagels
      • Bake at 200 degrees for 10 minutes.
      • Serves 24.

  3. Bannock
    • Ingredients:
      • 500 ml All purpose flour
      • 500 ml whole wheat flour
      • 40 ml baking powder
      • 75 ml sugar
      • 5 ml salt
      • 500 ml milk
      • 2 eggs
      • 125 ml oil
    • Directions:
      • Mix flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a large bowl.
      • Beat eggs lightly in a small bowl.
      • Add the milk and oil.
      • Mix well.
      • Add egg mixture to dry ingredients.
      • Shape dough into ball and place balls onto a greased cookie sheet.
      • Bake at 375 for 30 minutes.
      • Makes about 24 pieces.

  4. Beans and Wieners
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 large can pork and beans
      • 6 wieners, thinly sliced
    • Directions:
      • Briefly fry wieners.
      • Put pork and beans into a large pot - add the wieners.
      • Warm up until heated through.
      • Serves 24.

  5. Caramel Corn
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 cup brown sugar
      • 1/2 cup margarine
      • 1/2 tsp salt
      • 1/4 cup corn syrup or pancake mix and microwave 2 minutes on high
      • Add 1/2 tsp baking soda and stir well - it should become bubbly
    • Directions:
      • Pour mixture into a paper bag of popcorn 2/3 full (a grocery size bag) - shake well.
      • Microwave 1 1/2 minutes on high.
      • Shake.
      • Microwave 1 1/2 minutes again.

  6. Celery and Cheese
    • Ingredients:
      • Celery
      • Cheese spread
    • Directions:
      • Wash and cut celery into stick size.
      • Spread cheese and enjoy.

  7. Cheese Straws
    • Ingredients:
      • 100 g plain flour
      • 50 g margarine
      • 50 g cheese
      • Pinch of salt
      • Pinch of pepper
      • Cold water
    • Directions:
      • Grate cheese.
      • Put flour and margarine into bowl and mix with your fingers until it forms little crumbs.
      • Add grated cheese to 4 teaspoons of water and mix.
      • Continue to add water a little at a time until dough sticks together but is not saggy.
      • Roll out the pastry on a floured table top until 1 cm thick.
      • Cut into shapes, put on greased pan.
      • Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
      • Cool on wire tray.

  8. Cheese Toast
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 loaf of bread
      • grated mozzarella or cheddar cheese
      • chive and tomatoes (optional)
    • Directions:
      • Place cheese and toppings onto the bread.
      • Broil until cheese is melted and heated through.
      • Cut into squares.

  9. Chicken Wings
    • Ingredients:
      • 2 tblsp lemon juice
      • 1/3 cup soy sauce
      • 1/4 tsp ginger
      • 1/3 cup honey
      • 1 small can tomato sauce
      • Chicken wings
    • Directions:
      • Mix lemon juice, soy sauce, and ginger.
      • Add chicken wings, making sure each is coated with soy sauce mixture.
      • Cover dish and let sit for 1 1/2 hours.
      • Remove wings and add soy sauce mixture with honey and tomato sauce.
      • Broil wings for 5 minutes.
      • Brush wings with sauce.
      • Broil wings for 5 minutes on the other side.
      • Brush wings and broil for 5 more minutes each side.

  10. Chocolate Chip Cookies
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 1/4 cups margarine
      • 2 cups brown sugar
      • 1 tsp. Vanilla
      • 3 cups flour
      • 1 tsp. baking soda
      • 1/2 tsp. salt
      • 3 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • Directions:
      • Preheat the oven to 375
      • Lightly butter cookie sheets.
      • Cream the margarine, add the sugar and beat until fluffy.
      • Add eggs and vanilla and beat until blended.
      • In a large bowl stir together flour, baking soda and salt
      • Gradually, add to the creamed mixture, and beat until well blended.
      • Stir in the chocolate chips until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
      • Drop by the tsp. onto a prepared cookie sheet.
      • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
      • Cool on racks.
      • Makes 6 dozen.

  11. Cinnamon Chips
    • Ingredients:
      • Pita Bread
      • Butter
      • Cinnamon
    • Directions:
      • Slice pita bread into small chip size triangular pieces.
      • Melt butter and brush over pieces.
      • Sprinkle with cinnamon and toast on cookie sheet a few minutes - careful not to burn them.

  12. Cinnamon Toast
    • Ingredients:
      • 4 slices bread
      • 2 tblsp margarine
      • 2 tblsp sugar
      • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
    • Directions:
      • Toast bread, spread with margarine.
      • Mix sugar and cinnamon - sprinkle on toast.
      • Put on cookie sheet under broiler for very short time.
      • Using broiler may be faster than toaster method when making larger amounts.

  13. Coleslaw
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 large cabbage
      • 2 large apples
      • salad dressing
    • Directions:
      • Shred the cabbage into a large bowl.
      • Grate the apples and add to the cabbage.
      • Add enough salad dressing to make creamy.
      • Chill and serve.

  14. Crispie Fruit Pizza
    • Ingredients and Directions:
      • Make rice crispie square mix as directed on this index and on cereal box.
      • Instead of shaping rice crispie mix into square pans, spread over cookie sheet into a round pizza crust.
      • Spread chocolate frosting (or desired flavour) onto crust.
      • Then add desired sliced fruit topping.
      • Chill and enjoy.

  15. French Toast
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 loaf of white bread
      • 6 eggs
      • 1-1 1/2 cups milk
      • cinnamon to taste
    • Directions:
      • Combine eggs, vanilla, cinnamon and milk.
      • Dip slices of bread into the egg mixture.
      • Fry bread on each side until brown.

  16. Garlic Bread
    • Ingredients:
      • 2 loaves of French Bread
      • margarine
      • basil
      • garlic powder
    • Directions:
      • Cut the loaves of bread lengthwise.
      • Combine basil and garlic powder with enough margarine to cover the bread.
      • Bake for 15 minutes.

  17. Gingerbread Snakes
    • Ingredients:
      • 50 g soft margarine
      • 50 g sugar
      • 1 tablespoon molasses
      • 125 g self-raising flour
      • 1 tablespoon milk
      • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
    • Directions:
      • Mix margarine and sugar, add molasses and mix.
      • Add self-raising flour, ginger and milk and well.
      • On a floured tabled top, shape into balls and roll into snakes.
      • Put on greased pan.
      • Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

  18. Good for You Granola Bars
    • Ingredients:
      • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
      • 1/4 cup margarine, melted
      • 1/2 cup milk
      • 1 egg
      • 1 1/2 cup granola
      • 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
      • 1/2 tsp baking powder
    • Directions:
      • In a mixing bowl, combine sugar and margarine.
      • Add milk and egg - mix well.
      • Stir together granola, flour, and baking powder.
      • Stir into egg mixture.
      • Spread batter into a greased and lightly floured 9X9X2 inch baking pan.
      • Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes or until centre is set.
      • Cool in baking pan and a wire rack.
      • Cut into bars.
      • Serves 24.

  19. Monkey Crisp
    • Ingredients:
      • 3 medium bananas
      • lemon juice
      • ground cinnamon
      • 3 tablespoons whole wheat flour
      • 3 tablespoons quick cooking rolled oats
      • 2 tabelspoons brown sugar
      • 2 tablespoons chopped peanuts
      • 2 tablespoons margarine
    • Directions:
      • Cut bananas into 1/4 inch slices.
      • Arrange slices in a 9 inch plate.
      • Brush banana slices with lemon juice.
      • Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.
      • In a small mixing bowl, stir together flour, rolled oats, brown sugar and peanuts.
      • With a fork, cut in margarine till mixture resembles crumbs.
      • Sprinkle crumb mixture over bananas.
      • Bake in a 400 degree oven for 12-15 minutes or till bananas are heated through.
      • Serve warm.
      • Serves 4 or 5.

  20. Nachos
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 large bag nacho chips
      • 250 g sour cream
      • mild picante sauce
      • grated cheese
      • chopped green and red pepper
    • Directions:
      • Place the nacho chips onto a cookie sheet.
      • Sprinkle on grated cheese and green and red pepper.
      • Bake in a 300 oven until cheese is melted.
      • Serve with picante sauce.

  21. Peanut Butter Cookies
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 cup butter
      • 3/4 cup white sugar
      • 1 cup peanut butter
      • 1 1/4 cup flour
      • 3/4 cup rolled oats
      • 3/4 cup brown sugar
      • 1 tsp. Vanilla
      • 2 eggs, beaten
      • 1 cup bran
      • 2 tsp. Baking soda
    • Directions:
      • Melt the butter.
      • Beat together with the sugar, vanilla, peanut butter and the eggs.
      • Combine flour, bran, oats, and soda.
      • Stir this into the butter mixture.
      • Drop by the teaspoonful onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
      • Bake at 350 for 15-18 minutes.

  22. Peanut Butter Muffins
    • Ingredients:
      • 3/4 cup milk
      • 1/4 cup sugar
      • 1 egg
      • 1/4 cup peanut butter
      • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
      • 2 cups biscuit mix
    • Directions:
      • Combine milk, sugar, eggs, peanut butter and oil in a medium-size bowl.
      • Blend well.
      • Add biscuit mix to milk mixture.
      • Stir well until blour is moistened.
      • Line microwave safe muffin tin with paper muffin cups.
      • Fill paper cups half full.
      • Place 6 muffins in microwave oven.
      • Microwave uncovered on HIGH power 2-4 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean.
      • Cook remaining 6 minutes.
      • Top with 1/2 teaspoon of your favourite jam or jelly.
      • Makes 12 muffins.

  23. Pigs in a Blanket
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 package of 12 wieners
      • Pillsbury crescent rolls (8 per pkg.)
    • Directions:
      • Boil wieners.
      • Separate the crescents into triangles.
      • Cut the wieners in half.
      • Place wieners onto the crescents and roll up.
      • Bake according to package directions.

  24. Popcorn Deluxe
    • Ingredients:
      • Popcorn
      • Parmesan Cheese
    • Directions:
      • Pop the popcorn.
      • While still hot, sprinkle on the parmesan cheese.

  25. Quesadillas
    • Ingredients:
      • 1/2 green pepper, chopped
      • 1/2 onion, chopped
      • 3 cups grated cheese
      • 2 tomatoes, chopped
      • 8 large tortillas
    • Directions:
      • Put 4 tortillas on cookie sheets.
      • Sprinkle cheese over all four.
      • Top with green pepper, onion and tomatoes.
      • Sprinkle seasoning (basil or oregano) on top.
      • Put 4 more tortillas on top.
      • Heat in oven for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.
      • Cut each quesadilla into 6 pieces.

  26. Quick Quesadilla
    • Ingredients:
      • Soft fresh burrito shells
      • Cheese
      • Salsa
      • Sour cream
    • Directions:
      • Layer, melt, put toppings on shells cut in pie shapes.
      • Serve.

  27. Rice Krispies Squares
    • Ingredients:
      • 50 ml (1/4 Cup) Margarine or butter
      • 1 250 g pkg. (about 40) marshmallows
      • 2 ml (1/2 tsp.) vanilla extract (optional)
      • 1.5 L (6 Cups) Rice Krispies cereal
    • Directions:
        In large saucepan over low heat, melt margarine. Add marshmallows; stir until melted and well blended. Remove from heat.
      • Stir in vanilla. Add cereal, stirring until coated.
      • Using lightly-buttered spatula, press into buttered 3.5 L (13 x 9") pan. Cool. Cut into squares.
    • Yeild:
      • 24 (5 cm/2") bars
    • Per Serving:
      • 75 Calories (310 KJ)
      • (1 Square) 1.7 g fat

  28. Rice Roll Ups
    • Ingredients:
      • 1/4 of an onion
      • 2 cups cooked rice
      • 1 grated carrot
      • 1/4 of a green pepper
      • 8-10 mushrooms
      • pkg. of 10 tortillas
    • Directions:
      • Chop onion, green pepper and mushrooms.
      • Grate carrot.
      • Saute all the vegetables in a pan and add the rice.
      • Put rice mixture into tortillas and roll.
      • Add grated cheese if desired.

  29. Salad Supreme
    • Ingredients:
      • 2 heads of lettuce
      • 4 carrots, grated
      • 4 ribs celery, chopped
      • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets
      • 1 cucumber, chopped
      • salad dressing
    • Directions:
      • Combine all of the ingredients, except salad dressing.
      • Place on plates and add dressing.
      • Grated cheese can be sprinkled on top if desired.

  30. Smores
    • Ingredients:
      • Graham crackers
      • Chocolate chips or pieces of chocolate bar
      • Mini marshmallows
    • Directions:
      • Put graham crackers on a plate.
      • Put one piece of chocolate or 6-8 chocolate chips on crackers.
      • Top with 5-6 mini-marshmallows.
      • Put in microwave for 10-15 seconds or until melted.
      • Top with another graham wafer.
      • Eat carefully -- this is hot!!

  31. Toasted Bagel Bites
    • Ingredients:
      • Bagels
      • Peanut Butter
      • Jam
      • Cheese Spread
    • Directions:
      • Cut bagels into finger food size.
      • Toast in oven and spread with desired topping.

  32. Toasted Cups
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 loaf bread, crusts cut off
      • 1 can mushroom soup
      • 1 lb. Lean hamburger
      • 1/4 of an onion
      • a bit of butter
    • Directions:
      • Cook onion and hamburger together in a pan.
      • Drain off any liquid.
      • Add cream of mushroom soup.
      • Butter bread slices.
      • Press slices of bread into muffin cups.
      • Toast in the oven at 400 for 5 minutes.
      • Remove cups from muffin tin - fill with hamburger mixture and reheat.

  33. Tomato Cheese Bake
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 loaf of bread (1 slice per child)
      • Cheese slices
      • Thinly sliced tomatoes
    • Directions:
      • Lay bread on a cookie sheet.
      • Place 1' cheese slice on each slice of bread.
      • Top with a tomato slice.
      • Bake for 20 minutes at 300.
      • Serves 24.

  34. Torpedo Subs
    • Ingredients:
      • 24 buns
      • 1 head lettuce
      • 4 tomatoes, thinly sliced
      • 1 container of bean sprouts
      • cheese slices
      • mayo
      • mustard
      • sandwich spread
    • Directions:
      • Spread the condiments on the buns.
      • Top with the vegetables.
      • Serve with sliced carrots.

  35. Veggies and Dip
    • Ingredients:
      • 8 carrots cleaned and sliced
      • 1 cucumber sliced
      • 2 broccoli heads
      • 1 celery stalk
    • Dip:
      • Favourite salad dressing/sour cream with added spice
    • Optional:
      • Bread Sticks
