Nine of these enormous engines were built for the Union Railroad in 1936 at the Baldwin Locomotive works outside of Philadelphia. Originally used in the steel industry these engines saw heavy use during World War II. But by 1949, the engines had been replaced by diesels. So they went to another U. S. Steel line - the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railroad. They were renamed to the 600 series. By 1960 all but Engine 604 had been scrapped except #604 which has been on permanent display in Greenville, PA since March 1985.
