Adopted as the "Official State Tree of the State of South Carolina" by Joint Resolution No. 63, approved March 17, 1939.

Found in the coastal areas of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia &  Florida

The South Carolina Palmetto is classified by the US Department of Agriculture as "Inodes Palmetto"

Also known as the Sabal Palmetto or the Cabbage Palmetto

Located on the State Flag & the State Seal

The Palmetto Tree symbolizes the defeat of the British Fleet.

And the defense of a fort on Sullivan's Island by Col. William Moultrie.  The fort was made of Palmetto logs.

Oddly enough, some of the Palmetto Tree is edible:

The large leafbud has been used for making salads, making pickles and making relishes.
