In the 1660s, King Charles II wanted to reward his friends for helping him become king.He named 8 of his friends the proprietors or owners of the Carolina Colony.The Lords proprietors, as they were called, were Edward Hyde, George Monck, William Earl of Craven, Lord John Berkeley, Sir John Colleton, Sir George Carteret, and Lord Anthony Ashley Cooper. The people in Carolina wanted to make their own rules and run their own lives.
