During the War

home

The British planned to capture Charles Town. They changed their mind and decided to attack the fort on Sullivan's Island. An important battle occurred around Kings Mountain in 1780.The people who supported Great Britain were called loyalists. British Major Patrick Ferguson led about 1,000 loyaists westward to quiet the patriots in the area. Men who lived in the northern part part of South Carolina and in western North Carolina formed an army of "mountain men" to fight against the loyalists. The mountain men hid behind trees and rocks and fired at the loyalists, who marched to the battle in straight lines.
