State Name And Nickname  Home

South Carolina was named after a king of England. Charles I gave land in America to Sir Robert Health in 1629.  The land was a gift  for helping Charles I become king.  Part of this land became South Carolina. The name first was spelled Carolina.  This means land of Charles in Latin.  The state earned its nick name during the Revolutionary War (1775 ~1783).
