State Tree
The palmetto became South Carolina's state tree in 1939. Swamp cabbage and sable palm are other name for the palmetto. The palmetto grows in the southeastern United States. It measures about 30 feet(9 meters) tall. The trunk has rough, gray-brown bark. Palmetto leaves are about 4 to 7 feet (1 to 2 meters) long. The leaves are on a long stalk. They spread like fans and droops at the ends. It takes many years for new leaves to grow.
