EROSION

Home

What happens to the bits of rock created during weathering? Some of these bits of material stay in place. But much of the material is carried away by wind, water, and gravity. The carrying away of these materials is erosion. Like weathering, erosion happens everywhere. As rivers flow over the earth, they erode million of tons of soil. As soil is carried away, river channels get wider and deeper. Wind often with water to erode rock and form things like the bridge you see on the next page. And gravity causes weathered materials to erode by moving the materials downhill. Many things affect how quick or slowly erosion happens climate is one thing that affects erosion. Climate describes the weather of an area over a long time much of the area near Bryce Canyon and Zion parks is a desert climate. A desert is an area that gets only about 25 centimeters of rain or snow a year this amount of water can cause much erosion .What might happen if a heavy rain fell over these areas ? Erosion depends on other things , too. The slope of the land affects how quickly or slowly erosion happens. Erosion happens faster on slopes. can you explain why? the kinds and number of plants in an area also affect erosion. Areas with few plants erode quickly. Why do you think this is so?
