By Jessica Johnston Do the students of Quabbin Regional Middle/High School really feel safe, knowing that there are school shootings going on at schools around the world? Lindsay Fenlason, junior, was asked, “After the school shootings happened, did you feel there was anything that the school could do to prevent the horrible thing from happening to this school?” Lindsay replied, “After the school shootings I think that the counselors should have paid more attention to the troubled kids in the school, talked to them if they needed it!” Mr. Gumula, Dean of Students said, “When I found out about the Columbine High School shooting my main concern was the trickle effect, the copycat shooting. Also making sure that the students feel secure.” The Quabbin Middle High School has a school safety plan made up of different specialized teams for certain situations. This plan was not changed when the Columbine shooting occurred, but there was an upgrade in the system. If a student does go to Mr. Gumula about not feeling safe, his main concern is responding to the problem, finding out why the student is not feeling safe, what was going on and if there are students that are causing the person not to feel safe. An investigation will occur by school administrators. The Quabbin Middle High School security system makes the students feel safe and secure. If the problem arises that a student does not feel safe, Mr. Gumula will be right on top investigating to get to the bottom of it. |
