~ Military Opinion: ROTC Reacts ~

by Mark Pitzi
Recently a serious tragedy took place in New York City. Several Americans believe that this is the worst tragedy to occur since the Pearl Harbor incident, some people believe it’s worse. Quabbin is fortunate to have a Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Program on campus, and in light of the military aspect to the terrorist attacks, the Reservoir interviewed both of the faculty for the program, Colonel Charles Pyle and Commander John Magnino. Colonel Pyle, our Senior ROTC Instructor, who served as a Lieutenant in the Vietnam War, finds what happened to be terrible. He regrets the amount of dead/missing people. He says, “Our society is vulnerable to terrorism. We should reexamine our foreign policy, and limit our military response to events. I have empathy for all the brave fireman and policeman who are risking their lives.” Colonel Pyle grew up as a kid in New York, and lived there for 21 years. His two sisters still live there today. They both work very close to the World Trade Center. He does not believe that a third World War will take place. The Colonel thinks that this tragedy is different from the Pearl Harbor tragedy and finds it very serious. He is very disappointed with the security at airports and thinks carryon luggage shouldn’t be allowed because weapons could be brought on the plane. He hopes that security will be stricter about checking luggage. The pilot should never leave the cockpit and the door should remain locked at all times. Commander Magnino declined to make an official comment at this time.
