Up & Under 5-6 Uplyme (aet) |
The Celebration Champaign Devon Intermediate Cup Third Round East brought up the most entertaining game of the UAU season so far, even if the result was not to their liking. the conditions were not conducive to class football, but both UAU and their Perry Street League opponents were guilty of some attractive passing play. Paul Hutchings gave the home side the lead when he beat the advancing keeper to the ball from a Steve Cole corner. Uplyme then scored two relatively quick goals between good saves from their goalkeeper. UAU were not to be kept out however. Rob Southgate took a through ball from Paul Hutchings to slide it home before the onrushing keeper could make a challenge. A quick Uplyme throw-in resulted in Ian Miller being beaten at his near post leaving UAU aggrieved to be going into the break 3-2 behind.
The second half was also attractive to watch with both teams going close before UAU A shot parried by the visiting keeper ran loose for Dan Depledge to thoughtfully square the ball to an unmarked Rob Southgate to slot into the empty net from fifteen yards to balance out the scores again. UAU's pressure was converted into a lead when Richard Clarke's drag back from the by-line was met by Paul Hutchings to fire into the net with twenty minutes remaining. Stuart Cook then hit an Uplyme post before the 4-3 lead was turned into a devastating 4-4 with only five minutes left; a well worked move was finished off at the back post which originated from a defensive blunder, just after Paul Hutchings had a chance to put the tie beyond doubt but failed to hit the target with his effort.
Extra-time saw the opposition keeper keep out UAU as they pressed for a winner. Rob Southgate should have scored but the keeper made a save at his feet, only for Uplyme to go straight down the other end and make the score 5-4 from a defensive error in the six yard box. the score became 6-4 when an Uplyme substitute found himself in the six yard box following a deflected shot. Richard Clarke made an enterprising run into the box two minutes from time, only to be upended. Stuart Cook made no mistake from the spot to cause the visitors some tense final stages. Ian Platfoot nearly rescued the tie for UAU when he took a Rob Southgate pass and attepted to lob the goalkeeper, the keeper was not to be beaten at this late stage and held on for an Uplyme victory and a trip to Sampford Peverell in round 4.
