Truth in Action throughout AMOS
|
TRUTH that Amos teaches |
ACTION that Amos invites |
1. Steps toward knowing GOD and his ways
GOD's judgment should never be a surprise, because we know what his commandments are. His Word (in the Scriptures as well as the Word Incarnate, our LORD Jesus Christ), would announce any judgment with sufficient advance notice, to give his people a full opportunity to repent and turn away from their sin (see II Chron. 7:14). |
3:6
Understand that GOD sent calamity so that his people would reconcile with Him.
3:7
Understand that GOD never does anything that hasn't been announced through his prophets ahead of time. Attentively hear what the Spirit has said (through the prophets) to the churches.
7:7-9
Know that GOD judges all the world based on the standards of his Word and the example of Jesus Christ. |
2. Instructions for growing in piety
The rebellious and disobedient among GOD's people tend to discourage the faith and disposition of others to adopt standards of piety. GOD says that he will severely judge such people. GOD wants us to do everything possible to encourage his people to seek and obey his Word. |
2:4
Understand that ignorance of the Word of GOD leads to deception. Know that traditions tend to transmit trickery.
2:11,12
Neither discourage holiness, nor put obstacles in the path of those who seek it.
7:16,17
Allow the free manifestation of the prophetic ministry, so that GOD's people can be warned. Encourage the preaching, without concessions, of the Word of GOD.
8:11,12
Feel hunger and thirst for the Word of GOD while you have the opportunity. |
Keys for a wise life
The wise person doesn't depend on the spiritual experiences lived in the past to guarantee future successes. He doesn't adopt a lazy or indulgent attitude in the present. GOD rejects such complacency as self-indulgence. |
6:1
Be zealous for the things of GOD. Reject any attitude of spiritual elitism.
6:3-8
Control your appetites. Practice temperance at every moment. Be generous. Allow the zeal and selfless love of Christ to characterize your life. |
