I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs Date of last revision: 11/11/02
Genre: Comedy | Romance | Social Drama Synopsis: Amawa Hibiki is a young man just out of college, with an education to be an athletics teacher. He's been having a hard time finding a job since he's graduated, so all his money has gone towards living expenses. When his landlady demands his first payment to live in her living establishment upfront, he heads to the local middle school to get hired as a teacher. However, the principal refuses to hire him without hesitation. She will not hire men as teachers and makes it clear that she hates all men, saying they put no love into their passions and work. She is trying to convert the middle school in to an all girls school by slowly breaking down the morale of the male students and not hiring male teachers. Amawa does not give up! With the help of his landlady, he crossdresses as a woman without a second thought, and gets hired, so he can earn money and also prove the principal wrong. Now, he has to keep his real gender a secret, and avoid strange situations, including the affections of his students (from both genders!). SCORE: 60%
Plot: Sure the plot works. This series brings up a lot of taboo subjects, such as homosexuality, teacher-student relationships, crossdressing and combinations of all those. I really had to admire Amawa who is man enough to crossdress and not ever question his own sexuality, and only sees his crossdressing as a means of accomplishing his goals to prove the principal wrong (even though he begins to think he might be weird when he gets carried away shopping for women clothing and accessories). He never was freaked out about crossdressing. This series also deals with the common heartbreak of falling in and out of love and crushes.
However, the way it ended utterly sucked. I really wanted to see Amawa kick ass as a teacher and he never does. His love affair with a 14 year old is just wrong. Nothing happens ever between the two (but gets pretty damn close), but I still didn't like it. Amawa never does anything with his student, and he knew it would be wrong to do so, but with the way the series ends, it lets you know that he and his student still love each other when they shouldn't. Amawa never puts his foot down and tells his student to not like him because of the rules and taboo of a teacher/student relationship and their age difference. That's not the most terrible thing in the world, but very unprofessional on Amawa's part, and that really bothered me.
Also, the humor of this series could have been so much funnier if it had been executed better. That doesn't mean that Amawa had to freakout about crossdressing to make me laugh (and I'm glad he didn't), it just means that what jokes were executed should have been delievered better. So many jokes seemed forced and I hardly ever laughed out loud at this show.
The series should not have resolved the way it did. It either needed more episodes, or at least have Amawa tell his student that their relationship would never work.
Visual: This series did have excellent animation, which of course was very girly and pretty. It didn't push anything amazing, but then again, there was no need to with the subject of this series. The most technical scene was when a house burned down. There was no need for amazing animation for an anime that featured pretty common occurances. Nice animation, but loads of fan service. How could a series that seems to be meant for girls have so much fan service for guys? I guess this series was trying to pull in all audiences. Well, it just about made me sick.
Sound: Nice. Nothing extraordinary, but the commerical break was the most annoying piece of shit I have ever heard. But sound was just fine all around. Amawa's male voice wasn't bad, and Kuzuha's voice was its needed patheticness.
The Dub: Haven't seen it, and don't plan to.
Extra Rants and Bitching: Did not like this series. Many people might actually like it, because in reality, I suppose it's really not that bad of series. This series doesn't have any really nasty scenes or anything and does bring up taboo subjects that should be discussed, but I just didn't like the way this series was executed or resolved.
Score Comments: The taboo subjects of this series is not what bothered me, just the way they were resolved and handled. And, this series had far too much fan service that made me gag to no end. That's why this series got the score it received. I could rate it worst, and probably should, but I didn't.
