Aurelius Ballroom and Theatre:
This is a grand Art Deco landmark structure built in 1929, by the Aurelius Inc., when America was in the grip of dance fever, and dance pavilions called "casinos" sprang up all over the country in response to the frenzy. The Aurelius Ballroom was one of the finest, drawing thousands of nattily-dressed dancers from the American and European mainland. They came by steamship from Southern Florida to the isles and later jitterbug on the huge parquet floor, fueled by the Big Band music of the 1930's and 1940's.
Although the big bands have faded away, the Aurelius Ballroom still attracts crowds for celebrations of all sorts. Twelve stories high and 180 feet in diameter, the Aurelius has an Art Deco theatre downstairs where anything from ballets to plays to musicals and even operas and concerts were on the ticket to the simply enormous ballroom on top. Repainted just a few years ago, the ballroom retains its original style--a lavish medley of rose-hued walls, black Art Deco reliefs, an arching fifty-foot ceiling with five Tiffany chandeliers, an elevated stage, raised seating areas around the dance floor, and a vintage, full-service bar in back. The outdoor balcony that encircles the ballroom overlooks the protected coves of Twin Harbors Bay where seals, dolphins, and brightly-colored fish are usually found splashing about in the clear waters. And from here the view of the isles and Caribbean Sea is fabulous, sometimes stretching all the way to the Bahamas.
Numerous weddings take place on the balcony or inside the ballroom all year round. There's so much space inside that an altar and theater-style seating can be set up in one area, and the reception tables and chairs in another. The recent addition of a gourmet chef to the Casino staff means that the cuisine will be beautifully presented is the event space itself.
Ceremony Capacity: The area in front of the stage seats 1,200; the balcony holds 150 standing guests.
Event/Reception/Meeting Capacity: As few as 100 or as many as 1,200 seated guests. The balcony can hold up to 150 standing guests for a cocktail reception.
Fees: A $1,000 deposit is required to reserve your date. The event balance and final guest counts are payable 2 weeks prior to the function. Catering runs approximately $20-50/ per guest: beverages, tax and a 20% service charge are additional. The Ballroom rental fee is $2,500.
Availability: Year-round, daily, 8am-midnight.
