A Long Night

The Great Spirit made it to always change
Sunlight to play...Night to sleep...
Everything good.
~Chief Flying Hawk (Oglala Sioux)

The moonlight toys with my head
Speaking frigid words without sound
Jerking my heart on puppet strings
Let, right, and dancing around

Thirsting for the golden sun
Stretching and never trying to reach
Trapped in a night of pale forgeries
Sucking the life from me like a leech

Day breaks no more, dawn is not seen
Eyes filled with twirling moon and stars
The silence of silence, silence in anger
Sounding on the trumpets of Mars

Venus, when will you herald the dawn?
Shall you always jealously guard the light?
Arise, sing for the dazzling day
Release me from the chains of night.
