Lost Childhood

by Hsinching Wei

A plump furry figure with its arms out-stretched
Sits on top of the closet shelf.
Wearing a royal blue jacket carpeted in gray dust,
It stares with button eyes into the room
Watching the bed where it once slept--
Not alone.
It tries to catch the eye of the girl on the phone,
To play a game of pretend,
To have a tea party,
To hug,
But the girl is not listening--at least not to him.
She is painting her toenails and talking about life--
About Tommy, the boy from biology, calculus, homework, and college.
However, the hunched dusty figure continues to beam,
Sitting in the dark with a pink stitched U smile
Waiting for her to remember.
