Nightfall

by Julia A. Staverosky

The first star appears timidly through the darkening veil,
A pioneer with a thousand followers
Each a single hope and dream of the world.
Oh that I could reach and place myself
On heaven's high bough above the world
To lead those that follow with hope and joy
But the sky is full and there is no room above me
For one more dreamer.
Reaching high to grab a piece of the veil
As it slowly covers the earth
Searching for an empty space to fill,
I latch on tight
While the world goes on below me.
But the darkness falls fast and my hand slips loose
For the earth will not relinquish her hold upon me
And my dreams are left behind as I fall to the ground.
So hold tight all you dreamers
And follow not all those before
For the veil of darkness has fallen
And I am a falling star.
