Ten Bears
I was born upon the prairie,
where the wind blew free,
and there was nothing to break
the light of the sun.
I was born where there were no enclosures,
and where everything drew a free breath.
~Chief Ten Bears
I was born within restrictions
My waterfalls coming from metal
My wind from dials
My sun from florescant light bulbs.
I breathed--
Not the sweet love of Earth's soul
But of dust
And decay.
I dreamed--
Of dancing in the waves
Of running on the prairie
Of soaring through the clouds
Of living in the stars.
