To Dad

To Dad

I can see that you're getting older
All those ten minute naps
Are starting to add up.
I worry for you, Dad.
And I've begun to think about
What will happen when you are gone.
Last night you told me:
"You have to remind yourself that this is all going to end."
But I never want you to go.
I want to be your little girl forever,
Your pumpkin.
I want to have those late night drives
And answers to every question
Forever.
Even if I can't go back
To those dream-like childhood days
When we fed those squirrels Raisenettes
And even if I can't stay here
Reading your books and sharing your dreams
Even if I have to move on,
Like you say it should be,
I want you to be there.
I'm afraid, yes, of what this future holds.
You're so tired, Dad, I can see it.
Please don't fall asleep forever.
If I can't be your little girl
Or your daughter to be proud of forever
Then always stay my daddy.
Don't ever leave me,
Please.
I love you.
