Nethersite
The word is derived from Parasite and Nether
(nether meaning ‘nothing’)
Nethersite’s appear to be from a plane of existence that is not the Prime Material.
In order to affect anything in the Prime Material world they must inhabit a body.
If a body is already dead a Nethersite will have to put (sacrifice) 1 level into the body first. Thus a 5th level Nethersite entering an already dead body will be 4th level. The lost level will not be regained until the Nethersite has spent a month on it home plane.
In order to have a dead body act as a host the body must not have been dead for more than 3 days. Also if a body has had burial oils or incantations or mummifying etc it cannot be used as a host.
A qualified dead body that a Nethersite puts a level into will have half of the total of original hit points of the body or 8 hit points. Which ever is greater, but it will never had more than the total number of hit points it had.
For a potential host that is not dead yet the Nethersite will have to use Vampiric touch on the potential host. When the potential host reaches 0 hp from this method the Nethersite inhabits the body.
The host body will have what ever hitpoints the Vampiric touch took.
IE a host that had 10 hit points total but then was wounded to 4 hit points. The Nethersite drains those 5 hitpoints and inhabits the body. The host will have 4 hit points. From there the host can be healed up to its total of 10 through normal means rest or spells etc.
If the host is killed after a Nethersite has taken up residence in it the body cannot be inhabited again by any Nethersite.
A host Nethersite will attack at the level of its host (physically and mentally NOT clerically or wizardly) or at the level of the Nethersite, which ever is greater. For this reason they usually like strong fighters as hosts.
Nethersites
- Level 4-6 Common
- Level 7-8 Rare
- Level 9-10 Very rare
No Nethersites below 3rd level or above 10th level have been encountered.

Nethersites can use magic ability as a normal mage at the level the Nethersite is (the host level has nothing to do with its magic abilities).
They can use spells with or with out a host and don’t need the material components to cast spells.
With a host a Nethersite can attack AND cast spells.
A Nethersites attachment to the Prime Material is through its eyes, there fore they are the only things visible when not in a host. When in a host the host will have the color of the eyes of the Nethersite NOT that of the host.
Nethersites are medium sized creatures and so mostly inhabit similar sizes.
Nethersites host can be hit as the host could be hit.
The Nethersite itself can only be hit by +2 weapons or weapons that can harm Ethereal or silver weapons with a magical +1 bonus.
The Nethersite will not sustain any damage as long as it is in a host. The host will sustain all damage. When the host reaches 0 hitpoints the body falls to the ground and the Nethersite still stands where it was and can move etc as normal.
When a Nethersite is in a host it can affect things on the prime material world.
IE say the arm of a host was severed (either before or after it became a host) the Nethersite can use its arm to hold things. Most of the time when this happens the Nether site will put on gloves etc to hide the fact that no one could see the arm that is using the weapon etc.
Once the host is dead however the Nethersite can no longer affect things in the Prime Material world (IE cannot touch or move things) But it can still cast its spells and be hit by magical weapons.
