In The Night

In the Night

I awaken to the cry of a lone wolf
Alarm streaks through me in the blackness
Then I hear your soft, even breath
A dreamless sleep you embrace.

Relaxed again I turn to hold you
Strong muscles lie beneath soft skin
Gentle arms slip around me
Pulling me closer against you.

The dark not so black after all
The half moon above us
A glowing cradle just begining to rock
A contented sign as you sink deeper into sleep.

A smile touches my lips
We've both learnt difficult lessions
Friendship, trust, compassion and love
Our hearts beat in unison.

Again the wolf puts mournful cry to air
Far distant comes another howl this one almost joyful
I close my eyes and snuggle closer still
I dream of morning and waking to your touch.
