They drove off at high speed in response to the officer
down call, lights flashing and siren wailing. Within 34 seconds they arrived,
Matt deactivated the sirens and parked around the corner. Both cops jumped
out and headed towards the sounds of gunfire. The radio crackled as the tuned
into Officer Jarvis's frequency.
"I'm holed up behind the patrol car, it's fragged and Stevens is down. First
aid is a bitch when you are under fire. There is one on the roof opposite
with an AK, the others are spaced around, some in the restaurant, others
by the truck; SMG's and heavy pistols. I'm holding them off so far but Stevens
is going fast.
"Don't worry Jarvis, Millburger and O'Hanlan here, we're getting into
position"
"Glad you could join the party guys" Jarvis quipped though his voice was
far from cheerful.
Matt raced up the fire escape towards the roof while Miles edged around the
corner and sneaked along the pavement to a doorway.
O'Hanlan carefully took aim and blew the head clean off one perp that was
hiding behind a water hydrant. His go-gang buddies were too busy blasting
the patrol car to notice so Miles lined up another one and took him down
too. The SMG wielding punk next to the guy O'Hanlan had just blasted reacted
this time though, emptying a clip in his direction.
Millburger had reached the roof as he heard O'Hanlan take down his second
adversary. The perp on the roof's edge opposite was crouching and firing.
Matt broke into a run as the shooter paused to reload; he heard the boots
on gravel and turned to face this unexpected threat. The booster had time
to slam in a fresh clip and raise his weapon before Officer Millburger lashed
out with one foot smashing the AK-47 back into the perps arm and face. He
dropped unconscious to the gravel roof; Millburger cuffed him and ran on
to the adjacent roof via a leap and tumble so he could get a clean shot at
the perps in the back of the armoured pickup up on the street corner.
Both cops heard a yell of triumph over the radio as Jarvis managed to stabilise
Stevens, they had obviously diverted the boosters attention. This much was
obvious to O'Hanlan who had taken a serious wound to the thigh while trying
to close the gap between himself and the remaining AK wielder. Another 17
year old booster went down to O'Hanlans marksmanship as the hyper penetration
round ripped through his neck tearing the main artery and showering his companion
with blood. Matts first shot from the roof failed to take down Mr AK and
he returned fire causing several flesh wounds, the parapet taking the brunt
of the assault. Then both Millburger and O'Hanlan blasted him simultaneously
and he went down in heap. The street was empty now except for the cooling
corpses, Matt radioed that he was heading down to the restaurant from the
roof. O'Hanlan acknowledged and was joined by Jarvis as he approached the
restaurant.
Jarvis waited by the door as O'Hanlan looked in one of the large shattered
windows, two women were tied too tables, a further pile of hostages were
huddled in the corner as 2 bikers argued and a third overlooked the hostages.
Miles jumped in only to discover a further 3 men, he bounced straight back
out and awaited a thug to stick his head out. Then the cops all heard a voice
yell "Right that's it Razor, kill them for me"
On the assumption he was talking about the hostages O'Hanlan jumped back
in, blasted a booster point black removing the back of his head, rolled and
came up smiling. Jarvis kicked the door in and Matt came down the back stairs.
Heartburn, a small thin man directed what turned out to be a hand held flamer
in Mile's direction and fired. The table he dived behind took the brunt and
he came up firing but the leader Carnage was unimpressed and ran at him HP
rounds embedding in his armour. As he crashed through he burning table Carnage
popped his wolvers, wrong footed O'Hanlan and ripped through his body armour
seriously injuring him. Pain editor aside, Miles was worried, he dived back
out through the window with carnage crashing after him. Jarvis interposed
himself yelling "Run for it" and blasted Carnage point blank. His shots caused
the giant some damage but not enough to stop him nearly removing Jarvis's
arm. he collapsed in a slowly spreading pool of blood.
Millburger crashed through the back door of the storeroom into the restaurant
and engaged razor who sprayed him with SMG shells which started to shred
his body armour but caused no real injury. Razor fell back as he realised
that he was outclassed in hand to hand combat with this cop as heartburn
tried to maneuver for a shot. Matt dived behind razor to avoid the flame
as the go-ganger ran for his hog parked in the restaurant; the flame missed
everyone and Millburger jumped in, swept heartburn's feet and punched him
in the face knocking him out. He jumped to his feet on hearing the roar of
a starting bike and barely had time to avoid Razor as he tried to run him
down.
Outside Carnage had taken a serious wound in both legs but was so high on
drugs that he didn't notice except for the fact he obviously wasn't going
to catch this cop, so he returned to the bar. Miles cautiously moved after
him. Carnage had just climbed back in through the window, O'Hanlan close
on his heels as Razor's bike smashed through the doors and its rider raked
Mile's with SMG fire as he rode off down the road. ignoring the shells O'Hanlan
once more entered the building to see his partner engaging Carnage in hand
to hand combat. The two remaining juve gangers were shooting ineffectually
at Millburger whenever the opportunity presented itself, so it was not surprising
when one dropped as Miles shot him through the head, the other taking cover
behind a table.
The furious no quarter hand to hand combat between Millburger and Carnage
was tearing up the restaurant. Millburger had already seen the devastating
effect of those wolvers and had no intention of getting hit by them, passing
up several openings that would have left him vulnerable. He silently thanked
O'Hanlan for seriously injuring the giant in both legs which was hampering
his movement and allowing Matt to outmaneuver him. Eventually a combination
of many light but stinging blows and blood loss put the big booster leader
down with a crash. Both cops breathed a sigh of relief; the final gang member
lying dead in a pool of his own arterial blood, O'Hanlan's gun claiming another
victim.
The hostages were profusely grateful and the owner of the restaurant offered
the pair a free meal on the house sometime. The meatwagon arrived to pick
up the pieces and the partners headed back to the station for a coffee and
a doughnut (well it had to happen sometime). When they made it back to the
station house the station was filled with news of Biotechnica's latest
breakthrough in cybertechnology; the ED-2000. Rumour was that they were going
into mass production soon and would be put on the streets to aid in law
enforcement, word was that job cuts could be next. On a lighter note though
a few beat cops had a laugh at O'Hanlans expense as the woman he had rescued
form the killer clown had developed a crush on him and had dropped of flowers
at the station house.
Over the next week O'Hanlan took Syreena out to dinner (hey it made a change
from kibble). They hit it off, which was not difficult as she was head over
heels in love. Millburger gave Jimmy some martial arts lessons and started
part time work as a bouncer at the local nightclub for some spare cash to
help pay the kid's education. Both of them were thankful for the reasonably
quiet week as this gave their bodies time to heal.
it was mid afternoon when they got the call to an 'aggravated assault' at
Milton towers (a mid level beaver residence down town). When the patrol car
pulled up beside the ambunaught they spotted the medic treating a suit who
had 'low level city hall' written all over him. He had multiple stab wounds
(non-fatal) but he looked a mess. A brief interview as he went under to the
effects of the sedative revealed that he and his associate had come to evict
Mr Dawson from apartment 241 on the 4th floor due to non payment of rent.
Mr Dawson had become violent and attacked himself and their allotted security
guard with a knife, he had managed to escape with only the wounds you could
see but the other two were being held hostage.
The pair made their way to the 4th floor with all due haste and immediately
heard the sounds of a heated argument. Peering around the doorway they could
see Mr Dawson holding the other suit upto his eye level shouting in his face
brandishing a gun; which he had obviously taken from the unconscious guard
on the floor. O'Hanlan drew his gun and waited while Millburger announced
his presence and moved into the room arms open declaring his intention to
talk. The perp withdrew and threatened the hostage so officer Millburger
stopped and slowly drew his gun before throwing it out the door so they could
talk and Dawson would feel more in control. The man eased off a bit and began
to explain that a new meat food corporation called Tastit had taken over
Burgerease; the company he worked for. They sacked all the local staff so
they could import cheap foreign labour, and no he can't pay the rent but
he has got no intention of having his wife and kids thrown onto the street.
Nearly 20 minutes passed as Millburger tried to talk the guy down, he nearly
succeeded but a slip-up caused the guy to retreat towards the bedroom once
more threatening the life of his hostage. On hearing the kids cry in the
bedroom, Millburger changed tack towards caring for the kids. Dawson hesitated
but a noise outside startled him and he accused the cop of being a corporate
stooge and pulled the gun on Millburger. Fortunately the safety was still
on and Matt jumped the guy, forcing him to the ground and cuffing him as
Dawson broke down in tears. Meanwhile O'Hanlan had managed to stabilise the
guard and by now the medics were arriving.
"Well well if it ain't the chaos twins" joked Speed as he entered with his
ubiquitous trainee Kevin
"Oh no, not again" groaned O'Hanlan
"We've got a woman who needs assistance if you can spare the time Speed"
called Millburger.
Grinning, Speed crouched by the woman, examined her and pronounced her fit
after waking her up with some concoction and sticking a plaster on the bullet
crease in her forehead.
"take two asprin and see your hairdresser love, you'll be fine in the morning."
said Speed doing up his case and directing Kevin to get him a tinnie.
Speed looked the cops over appraisingly "Not injured?" he queried "Either
the body armours getting better or you two have laying low"
"Look you ars...." but O'Hanlan was talking to thin air as Speed and his
protégé' disappeared downstairs. Millburger tried to comfort
the woman and gave her and the kids a lift to a hostel he new of that was
fairly decent, making a mental note to put in a good word with the judicial
team for the husband.
As they were taking a break a call came in from Pierson in Robbery, they
wanted some backup on a bust downtown.
"Oh great a chance to work with plain clothes" groaned Millburger as he started
the engine and pulled away. When they reached the designated address two
men were waiting by a tan sedan.
"About time, we are on a tight schedule boys" growled the older of the two
while the other pulled a hurricane assault shotgun from the boot "Perk of
the job" he grinned as he saw the cops starring at the weapon.
"Where do you want us then...Sir" Millburger grunted.
"Right listen up, the fence is in apartment 12 on the 2nd floor, their are
3 thieves in with him and possibly a bodyguard but we are 'nt expecting trouble.
You're here to pick up any loose ends. Millburger you're on the fire escape,
O'Hanlan you're with me and O'Hanlan; no shooting unless it's absolutely
necessary, I do want some live ones."
O'Hanlans eyes went skyward as Pierson's partner sniggered.
"Let do it" ordered Pierson as he made his way up stairs adjusting the NCPD
bullet proof vest he had been putting on while talking.
Pierson blasted the door open with the Hurricane and stepped in. "Freeze
shitheads, this a bust"
His authoritative tone was impressive and backed up with nearly equal numbers
and an assault shotgun in close quarters; the perps threw their hands up
and surrendered without firing a shot.
"That's how it should be done" stated Pierson as he gathered the loot and
left the booking of the perps to uniform. "I'll include your valuable assistance
in the report boys" came the voice of Pierson as he walked down the stairs.
Millburger was not impressed with the fence who had quite literally crapped
his pants at having a shotgun shoved in his face.
"Can't we hose him down or something?" queried Matt
"Come on lets get back, sooner we do the better" said Miles as he shoved
the 4 perps in the back.
