Magnetism
Magnetism- A force of attraction and repulsion.
Natural Magnet- Magnetite or Lodestone. A naturally occuring magnet.
Poles of a Magnet - North and South. The force of attraction is the strongest at the poles.
Magnetic Substance- A substance that is affected by a magnetic field. ie. iron, nickel and cobalt.
Law of Magnetic Poles-
Likes Repel
Opposites Attract
Magnetic Field- A region around a magnet where thr force is the strongest. The strength of the magnetic field decreases as the distance from the field increases.
Domain - A little block of a positive and negative.
Demagnetize a Magnet - The domains no longer line up (the domains point in all different directions). Three ways to de magnetize a magnet: 1) Heating. 2) Hitting 3) Dropping.
Geographic Pole - The physical North and South. Where the Earth spins on its axis.
Magnetic Pole- Magnetic north and south. Bathurst, Canada. Earth is a magnet due to the iron nickel core and the planets rotation.
Earths' Core:
Earths' Magnetic Field
Cardinal Points- Principle points on a magnet: North, East, South and West. Going clockwise: Never Eat Sour Watermelon or Never Eat Soggy Waffles.
Azimuth- Distance in degrees. Work clockwise starting at North.
Bearing- Position related to ones own. Use youself as a staring point.
Earth As a Magnet - This is caused by: 1) The rotation of the earth. 2) The iron and nickel core.
Aurora - Colorfull light display caused by collisions between charged particles. Aurora Borealis- northern lights and Aurora Australis- southern lights. Charged particles from the sun collect in the Earth's magnetic field. The color of the aurora depends upon what particles are trapped in the atmosphere.
Electromagnet - A temporary magnet produced by an electric current. The more turns of the wire the stronger the magnet. The stronger the battery the stronger the magnet.
Generator - Turns mechanical energy into electrical energy. A wire around a magnet turns with in a coiled wire. The turning of the magnet creats electricity.
