The 1966 Annual (published 1965)

"My ship is a most peculiar craft. You would not know it for a space ship."

The very first Doctor Who Annual was published in 1965 for the Christmas/New year 1966 market. The price was 9'6, and proved to be an extremely popular stocking filler. The contents were as follows:

Text Stories:

The Lair of Zarbi Supremo

The Sons of the Crab

The Lost Ones

The Monsters from Earth

Peril in Mechanistria

The Fishmen of Kandalinga

All of the above were text stories as opposed to comic strips. They featured a variety of television monsters. The Menoptera, Zarbi, Voord and Sensorites are either featured inside or on the cover. This must have been a costly excercise, as later years proved 'tv monster' free.

Fillers:

Who is Dr Who?

The Equations of dr Who

The above were both two page spreads. In later years, these 'fillers' generally involved space travel, greek legends and fascinating facts. It's a nice touch that for the first annual, world distributors managed to keep these fillers Doctor Who related.

Games:

Journey Back to Earth

A two page board game in the style of 'Snakes and Ladders'. Not exactly Trivial Persuit...

Price:

As mentioned, this was a big seller and as a result, is one of the least expensive of the Sixties Annuals.

In good condition, expect to pay between ten to fifteen pounds.
