The rumors were true, Charmed is losing one of its leading ladies: Shannen Doherty won't be returing as Prue Halliwell for the show's fourth season this fall. Reportedly, Doherty quit the series May 11, but a source close to the show says the actress was fired. Doherty's abrupt departure comes hot on the heels of her pleading no contest to a drunken-driving charge stemming from a December arrest. She is due back in court June 12 for sentencing. This is the second time Doherty has left an Aaron Spelling-produced series under a cloud of controverst. Known for her purportedly hellish antics on and off the set, she was fired from Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1994 - even though her character, Brenda, was one of the show's most popular. Whatever the reasons behind this depature, Doherty - who directed Charmed's recent season finale - and Spelling Television Inc. each released statements insisting that the parting was amicable. At press time, it was unclear whether Prue would be recast or a new character would be brought on. Rumors abound that another former 90210 starlet - Vanessa Marcil, Jennie Garth or Tiffani Thiessen (Gina Kincaid, Kelly Taylor and Valerie Malone) - might step in to fill the void. A Spelling spokeswoman, however, stressed that talk of recasting was 'premature'. |
