Rumors that "Charmed" star Shannen Doherty would be replaced by Jennifer Love Hewitt were nixed when the actress turned down the part. The former "Party of Five" actress, who also starred in FOX's short-lived "Time of Your Life," was approached by producers of The WB series to replace Doherty, who left the show earlier this month, sources close to the show tell the New York Post. Although no reason was given as to why Hewitt turned down the part, she has been pursuing a film career and perhaps felt that it wasn’t time to return to TV. The actress recently starred with Sigourney Weaver in "Heartbreakers" and plays the devil opposite Alec Baldwin in the in limbo "The Devil and Daniel Webster." Doherty's departure, which is rumored to have been prompted over a feud with co-star Alyssa Milano, may be a sign of trouble behind the show's scenes. In addition, Combs has reportedly asked for and received a big per-episode raise, which allows her to pull in more money than Milano, the show's star. Other actresses whose names have been floating around for the "Charmed" role include Tiffani Thiessen, Soleil Moon Frye and Irene Molloy. The latter actress would be an especially interesting choice since on her last show, "Grosse Pointe," she played the Doherty-like star of a "Beverly Hills, 90210"-esque teen soap. | |

Starlet Rose McGowan or Denise Richards may be joining the witchy sisters on The WB's "Charmed." The New York Post reports that the two actresses are being eyed as replacements for Shannen Doherty, who left the show last month. Richards, 29, is best known as the girl in the wet t-shirt in “Wild Things.” Her other films include “Starship Troopers,” “Drop Dead Gorgeous,” “The World is Not Enough” and “Valentine.” Meanwhile, McGowan, 27, has appeared in the films “The Doom Generation,” “Scream,” “Jawbreaker” and “Monkeybone.” Interestingly enough, Richards and McGowan worked together in the 1997 independent feature “Nowhere.” Doherty is rumored to have left the show over behind-the-scenes problems with her co-star Alyssa Milano. The part was recently offered to former “Party of Five” actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, who turned down the part to concentrate on her film career, according to an earlier report in the Post. |
