Clangers - Characters
Major Clanger He is the head of the family. He is called Major because he is the largest and the oldest and most important of the Clangers. His coat is made of beaten brass like armour but he does not fight. His armour is to protect him from things that fall from the sky.

Mother Clanger She looks after them all. She is kind and loving, like all mothers but is sometimes worried and cross when the small Clangers misbehave. |
Small Clanger Small and Tiny Clanger their playing and exploring are the primary focus of the Clangers series. Small Clangers being notable for his experiments by which he learns and pushes back the boundaries of his world. |
Tiny Clanger Tiny Clangers is the compassionate side of the Small / Tiny Clangers double act, and it is her who often finds solutions to the Clangers problems by her friendliness. |
Granny Clanger She lives a quiet life in her little cave. She likes to collect the silver threads of frost that catch on the edges of the craters and knit them into tinsel string. |
Clanger Food |
Blue String Pudding Grown on spaghetti trees. Together with the green soup this forms the staple diet of the Clangers. |
Soup-wells Impenetrable to all but the Soup-dragon. Capacity unknown, temperature 67ºC. Green soup said to taste of peppermint and spinach (unconfirmed). |
The Iron Chicken |
The Iron Chicken lives on her cosy comfy spiky nest of old
scrap-iron and bits of machinery which she has gathered up in her
travels. She is very good at making things. She made Tiny
Clanger a Radio-Hat so that Tiny can speak to her by radio any
time she wants to have a chat.
The iron chicken is a great traveller and collector, she knows just about everybody in space, even to the farthest galaxies where really unusual creatures live. Meccano. Nest of collected metallic junk, with some electronic
equipment. |

The Froglets The Froglets came to the Clangers' planet in a top-hat which must once have belonged to a conjurer or a magician because the froglets can hop in and out of this top-hat and vanish and appear more or less anywhere on the planet. They can also make other things disappear and appear and do all manner of tricks. Nowadays the froglets live in a lake of pink soup in a cave at the middle of the planet. Oddly enough, this lake is sideways. The surface is like a smooth wall at the side of their cave, except when the froglets dive into it. Then it breaks into upright ripples and waves and splashes. Froglets don't mind about this. Upwards, downwards or sideways are all the same to them. They are just as happy standing on the roof as on the floor. The froglets are rather odd creatures really but like the
Clangers and all their other friends they are quite ordinary and
reasonable when you get used to them. |

Other Characters |
The Cloud Just one cloud floats in the sky above the surface of the Clanger's planet. It looks like an ordinary white cloud like you would see on a summer's day on Earth, but this cloud is quite different. This cloud has a mind of its own and a will of its own. It is very friendly, of course, but it does rain a bit sometimes. Cotton wool on cardboard with cut-glass raindrops |
The Glow Buzzers Torch bulbs with wings |
Skymoos The Iron Chicken called the Sky-moos to the Clangers' aid when their planet became covered with green plants. Since then the Sky-moos have often called on the Clangers. They just come to say hallo and pass the time of year, but I think they secretly hope the Clangers will one day grow another huge field of green plants for them to eat, because Sky-moos are great eaters of greenery and there is a shortage of green vegetables in space. Plastic-foam bodies. N.B. using ears as wings is only possible in low gravity conditions (not recommended on earth) |
Hoots Adapted bicycle horns etc... |
Music Trees These are a handsome pair of crotchety trees that Tiny Clanger grew from the last two semiquavers that the soup-dragon forgot to eat. They make lots of music which is marvellous for the Clangers because, although they enjoy listening to music, they also use it to make their fishing-boat fly.
Metal Lids The Clangers planet not having a thick atmosphere like our own allows meteorites and other even odder things that happen to be hurtling about in space through to it's surface. Because of this, the Clangers live inside their planet and wear armour plates. They go into their planet through holes which are protected with stout metal lids. It is the cling-clang-clonk sound of these when they are slammed shut that gives the Clangers their name. |
Other Junk Junk. |
Soup-Dragon In fact she should be called the Soup-Dragon because there aren't any soup-dragons living anywhere else. She lives inside the planet. She cooks soup in the volcanic wells that lie under the pointed chimney hills at the edge of the copper tree wood. She cooks red soup, green soup and sometimes even purply-blue soup. The Clangers are her friends and are glad she is there because soup is their favourite food. In fact, apart from the blue-string pudding that grows on the roof, it is their only food. Luckily it has been calculated that there is enough soup in the wells to last the Clangers for another 7,384,497,003 years, if they are careful.

Baby Soup-Dragon |
Small Blue Planet A long way away in a far corner of the sky, you can see, on a clear night, a faint blue-coloured star. It is really a planet but it is such a small and unimportant one that it doesn't have a name. For one family, however, it is a very important place. It is home. For the series the planet was constructed from a football bladder encased in plaster. The lids being made out of silvered buttons. |
The Earth A wooden ball about 2" in diameter, painted with clouds etc... as seen by Apollo. |
