SEQUEL/SEASON INFO: Season 3, Sometime before "Pretense" (season 3/4, aired Jan 21, 2000 in U.S.) Note that although this story arc was posted in part after the Season 4 episode "The Curse", most of it was written about a year before that episode aired. Any subplot similarities within the cycle are purely coincidental.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:This story is part of a three-part arc, each part being about 40-60 pages. Developments in Season 4 canon make the entire story arc 'Alternate Reality', in that there are elements here which significantly contradict events in Season 4. There is also a prequel ("The Thoughts of Cattle") which occurs 3 months earler in the story universe.

Egyptian art motifs were scanned from The Egyptian Book of the Dead--The Book of Going Forth By Day, Translation by Dr. Raymond Faulkner, Introduction & Commentaries by Dr. Ogden Goelet, Chronicle Books, SF, 1998. The ultimate source of these images is a scroll known as 'The Papyrus of Ani', which was found in the tomb of Ani, Scribe of the Accounting of the Divine Offerings of All the Gods of Thebes. It dates from the 'New Kingdom' era, about 3500 years ago. It is a pretty safe bet that the copyright held by the original artists has expired by now!

• My apologies for the excessive delays in the completion of this story arc. Several elements of this story appeared in season 4 canon in ways that relegate this fic to AU. While I don't own the rights to these characters, the rough work was read in its entirety by a 'beta reader' who later revealed that he was an established scriptwriter for VIP and Viper, who was trying to get a job on SG1 at the time, and who stated his deliberate *intent* to steal elements of this fic, and proceeded to gloat that I could do nothing about it. I do not know if he succeeded in getting the job (I had only his screenname) but, if he did, it seems likely that the use of Osiris in "The Curse" was based partly on *my* egyptology notes when preparing this fic. At any rate, you can understand why I might be rather bitter and disheartened about working on this novella after that experience and the subsequent episode content, EVEN IFthe slime didn't get the job and the episode content was purely coincidental.
