Johann was a champion gymnast in Germany, and nearly went to the Olympics. He utilizes his acrobatic skills in many combat situations.

History: Johann is the son of Kurt Wagner, the X-Men's Nightcrawler, and the grandson of Mystique, the sometimes-member of X-Factor, giving him the longest legacy within the X-Men. Johann was recognized as a mutant from the moment of his birth because of his blue skin and pupiless eyes. Johann's mother, a completely human woman, had a nervous breakdown and subsequently divorced Kurt. Kurt returned to the land of his birth and resumed his occupation as a priest. Johann was raised in a remote monastery in the Bavarian Alps for most of his childhood. Kurt taught him to make use of his shapeshifting ability very early on in life to protect him from the inevitable prejudices of the local peasants, and sometime after that Johann learned how to teleport himself from one point to another.

When Johann was ten, he began to compete on Germany's national gymnastics team, and went on to become their star male gymnast until he was fifteen. While performing a complicated vault in an Olympic qualification trial, Johann fell and hit his head, and the resulting concussion cause him to shift back into his normal 'blue' form. He was thrown off the team in disgrace, and he returned to his father's monastery with a much-changed and darker view of the world. Three years later, dissatisfied with his life of living in secret, Johann happened upon a newscast from America telling of the X-Men's first victory against the Eclipse Army. While the press painted the X-Men as terrorists, Johann knew he had found his calling. He begged his father to let him go to America and join the team, and Kurt finally gave in.

Johann was at first received with suspicion by the X-Men, but after he saved Blaze's life and infiltrated a government holding facility to obtain the antidote to a deadly virus Lauren Grey-Summers had contracted, they accepted him as one of their own.
