History: Darien was the third and last child of the original Magneto, leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. By the time his son was born, however, Magneto's views on mutant supremacy had become much less inflammatory, and he set out to teach Darien to use his powers for good.

Knowing that Darien would never be accepted at Xavier's school, he sent his son to a new government program designed to teach young mutants to use their gifts to help defend their country. Magneto immediately saw the program for what it was - a thinly veiled factory to turn out mutant assassins for covert missions. Having no other recourse, however, the master of magnetism left his son with General Conrad Poe, the man in charge of the program, with the provision that if anything happened to Darien he would reign destruction down on the general and all his compatriots.

At first out of fear, POE took Darien under his wing. Later, he and the boy developed a genuine rapport, and POE made sure Darien was taught how to use his gifts by the best of the best. Extremely bright and dedicated, Darien proved a fast learner, and soon his control over magnetism was rivaling his father's. Things fell apart, however, when Darien discovered that the mutant 'prisoners' he had made friends with during his stay in the program were not prisoners at all, but other trainees who did not have superpowerful fathers to protect them. The children were kept in cells, fed the bare rations needed for survival, and subjected to experiments and training regimes that would have killed a normal man straight out. POE was responsible for their treatment, and Darien furiously took his leave of the man he had come to consider his second father. The only reason he left POE alive was that he refused to stoop to the general's depraved level. Darien still followed the wishes of Magneto, however, and after he struck out on his own he set out for Westchester and Xavier's school, determined to refom the X-Men. He met Meg LeBeau in Westchester and joined forces with her, becoming the fourth member of the new team.
