History: Starling's birth brought great happiness to her parents, but her own life has been fraught with grief and loss. Starling's father was Weapon X scapegoat Deadpool and her mother a Shi'ar expatriate. Wade Wilson and his wife were overjoyed to finally be given a child, but soon after her birth, her mother was kidnapped by a rogue faction of her race, and Deadpool followed her into space. Nancy's parents never returned. She was taken in and raised by James Macdonald Hudson and his wife Heather, the aging former leaders of Alpha Flight. The Hudsons both died a natural death before Nancy turned eight, and the Canadian government sent her to an orphanage, where she was quickly branded a freak because of the ruff of feathers growing down her back and arms.

Never accepted because of her obvious mutation, Nancy traveled from orphanage to orphanage in Canada until she was finally adopted by an American couple. During her time as a ward of the state, Nancy developed into a keen student, and was shown to be a genius in every subject she chose. Her emotional makeup, unfortunately, was that of a scared young child even as she reached maturity, and her adoptive family treated her as little more than a slave and a laughing stock. Nancy was abused by her father, ignored by her mother and ridiculed by her two adoptive brothers. After her oldest brother attempted to smother her in her bed, only failing because of Nancy's regenerative mutation, she fled her home and traveled to New York City. She worked in a hospital as a cleaning woman for a time, and was recognized by one of the medical staff as a brilliant scientific mind. The doctor sponsored her admission into Johns Hopkins University, but before Nancy could attend his colleagues found out he had been fraternizing with a mutant. They expelled both Nancy and the doctor, and the man left her on the street, blaming her for his troubles. Nancy was 'adopted' by Shade, who recognized the spark of incredible genius lying under Nancy's deep-seated emotional problems. A fundamentally gentle person, Nancy didn't always agree with the Eclipse Army's ideals, but she stayed on as their chief weapons engineer, whether out of fear or gratitude to Adrienne no one could tell...

Parents: Deadpool (Wade Wilson) and an unknown Shi'ar woman
