POWERS: Nightcrawler can teleport herself, her clothes and a certain amount of additional mass through an unknown dimension, reappearing instantaneously at a desired point. She leaves behind the smell of sulfur and a small amount of smoke when she teleports. Nightcrawler's spine is also more flexible than a normal human, making her capable of performing incredible acrobatic feats and crouching for a long period of time with no damage to her body. Her body itself is covered in dark blue fur, making her blend into dark shadows.

HISTORY: Nightcrawler is the daughter of the mutant shapeshifter Mystique, and inherited her mother's blue skin as well as being born with a fuzzy coat of fur, shining yellow eyes, pointed canines, a prehensile tail and only three fingers and toes on each hand and foot. Fearful villagers, upon seeing baby Katrina, formed a mob to kill mother and child, and Mystique threw Katrina over a waterfall to save her own life. Katrina was found hours later by a gypsy circus, who bore no prejudice against 'freaks' and took the baby in. Katrina was raised as a circus performer, and her mutation soon enabled her to become the star acrobat of the show. Audiences assumed she was a normal girl in a demonic costume. Her closest friend was her foster brother Stefan, and she was never apart from him until an American entrepreneur purchased the circus. He wanted to cast Katrina in his show of freaks, but, horrified at the treatment the unfortunate humans received, Katrina left the circus and traveled home to Germany. In the small city of Weizeldorf, she sought to reconnect with her foster brother, but Stefan had gone mad in the time Katrina had been in America and murdered several children. The siblings ended up struggling, and Katrina broke Stefan's neck. Several eyewitnesses assumed Katrina was a demon, and also responsible for the other killings. Once again, Katrina found herself running from an angry mob. This time the townspeople were mentally frozen by Professor Charles Xavier, who had come to recruit Nightcrawler into the X-Women as one of his last acts before leaving for Shi'ar space. Katrina went back to American for a short time. She considered the X-Women too militant, however, and left to become a nun. When she was expelled from her monastery because of her demonic visage, she went with another former X-Woman, Shadowcat, and joined the British superhero team Excalibur. Excalibur eventually disbanded, and an older and wiser Katrina returned to the X-Women, still with the gentle and dignified bearing of a woman of god, but with the righteous streak of a fighter.
