HISTORY: Purgatory was the second human host that the Atom Cell found on earth. Formerly the mutant Sabretooth, Purgatory became one of the most deadly adversaries the X-Women have ever faced. The Atom Cell's primary function was to amplify the powers already lying dormant in it's mutant host, and with Sabretooth it latched onto his addiction to the feeling of satisfaction he got from a kill. Purgatory emerged, feeding off the dark energies of all those within range and turning the negativity he absorbed into concussive blasts.

Purgatory was only defeated when Rogue and Wolverine overloaded his mind with dark energy and caused the Atom Cell to leave Sabretooth's body or be destroyed. The cell was captured by the omnipotent, irrepressible cosmic being Raven and sunk into the sun, where it was finally destroyed. Sabretooth reverted back to his normal personality and powers, now a prisoner of the X-Women.
