HISTORY: The first time Rogue's mutant powers manifested, she put a boy in a coma and got kicked out of her house. Born to poor locals in Meridian, Mississippi, the stress and excitement of Rogue's first kiss caused her mutant powers to activate, draining the boy of his life force and nearly killing him. With an alien mind inside her own, Rogue wandered the streets confused for a time, and when she came home her parents threw her out.

Rogue hitchhiked through the United States and Canada, eventually hearing the rumors about Xavier's School but not having a means to get there. She finally ended up in Laughlin City, Canada, where she met the mutant woman Wolverine. Wolverine transported her to Westchester and the Xavier Institute, where Logan became a member of the X-Women and Rogue enrolled in classes. Rebellious Rogue soon grew dissatisfied with what she perceived as a goody-goody lifestyle, and she left the school as lost, angry and confused as when she first arrived. She proved an easy mark for Mystique, who knew Rogue's gift to absorb mutant powers from skin-to-skin contact could be of great use to her and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and Mystique all but adopted the young woman, acting as Rogue's mother for the remainder of her teenage years. In return, Rogue became a soldier in the Brotherhood, learning to use her gift for Mystique's design.

Rogue's crucible came when she and the Brotherhood encountered Carol Danvers, the super-strong defender of justice know as Ms. Marvel. Rogue got into a one-on-one battle with Carol, and, losing badly, Mystique ordered her to touch Ms. Marvel and hold on until Rogue killed her. Because of this, Rogue permanently absorbed Carol's super strength and her ability to fly. She also had Carol's psyche inside her own, and it slowly began to drive Rogue insane. Betrayed by Mystique and hated by the world at large, Rogue finally ran back to the Xavier Institute, where the professor helped exorcise Carol's mind from Rogue's and taught her to control her new powers. Older and wiser, Rogue became an X-Woman. She resumed her old friendship with Wolverine and started a romance with Remy LeBeau, the mutant man known as Gambit. Remy couldn't touch Rogue without risking death, but he loved her all the same. Rogue wasn't always able to return his affection, however, and the last straw came when she abandoned him to die in Antarctica following the revelation of his role in the Morlock Massacre.

Rogue eventually forgave Remy, but their romantic relationship remained strained right up until the time Remy was killed defeating the superpowerful entity Cosmic. Cosmic had infiltrated the X-Women in the guise of Rogue's former boyfriend 'Zeke', who was actually an alter ego of the time-traveling alien. Feeling the heavy weight of guilt after Remy's death, Rogue finally stepped aside and let Gambit and Wolverine, who had been having an illicit relationship for some time, have their happiness. Wolverine knew that Rogue was not a bad person but a tortured soul, who had many voices trapped inside her head and didn't always know which one to listen to. Rogue never found a new romance after Remy, but she continued to hone her flight and strength, and continue in the hope that someday she would gain control of her absorption powers and take another step towards a normal life.
