The tail of the platypus stores fat for when food supplies are low and energy is needed or when the platypus needs more energy to incubate eggs. The tail is broad, flat and paddle-like. Researchers apply a "squeeze test" to the tail in order to assess the amount of fat stored in there. From this they can rate the general physical condition of the platypus.
