Needing Cheese- An Amy Story

By Shattered Faith

Rating: G

Disclaimer: Amy and Willow are not mine, they belong to Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy and the WB.

Author's Notes: Okay, I don't know what I was on when I wrote this, but here it is: A bizzare little Amy-rat blurb.

Cheese. The mere thought of cheese made Amy¡¯s little pink mouth water with uncontrollable rat-drool. Cheddar .. Swiss . .provolone . .

Amy shook her head in frustration. She couldn¡¯t be thinking about that now, there were more pressing matters at hand. She had to make the Human understand, she wasn¡¯t supposed to be here! She wasn¡¯t quite sure what she was, but she knew that sitting here, day after day, in this cage full of pine bedding, wasn¡¯t what her life was supposed to be.

Amy looked up at the gigantic off-putting human face looming above her. This was Willow. Every time Amy saw her, it was like deja-vous. She knew Willow, from before. There must have even been a time when she could understand her strange language where she made tons of different sounds at once.

Amy cringed as her cage made a high-pitched sound, being opened on top by the alien hairless paw that had claw-like attachments way to long to be normal. She braced herself for the contact she knew was soon to come.

Sure enough, the mutated paw gripped Amy securely around her belly, and hauled her upwards. ¡°Oof!¡± Amy exclaimed, not exactly appreciating the fact that her paws were dangling in mid-air. She closed her eyes.

Soon, her paws made contact with Willow¡¯s surface. Every time this happened, it shocked and amazed Amy. I mean, here was this gigantic leg-like appendage, with hair in random places on it but certainly not covering the surface. How could a creature have no fur except for on its head, and still allow itself to be seen in public? How ugly!

Amy casually sniffed the creature¡¯s skin, quickly crawling up to the paw-like appendage. Here she felt most comfortable, because the creature held it¡¯s huge paw in a cup-like fashion. On it¡¯s leg-like thing, one wrong step could send Amy on a fall that she would never recover from. That would not be a good idea.

Amy gasped as the paw was quickly raised with her in it, and she suddenly found herself staring into the two weirdest eyes she had ever seen. There were both on the Front of this creature¡¯s demented, flat face, not to mention there was white on the sides!

Amy didn¡¯t want to be rude and stare, so she politely sat up and began to clean her face.

¡°Oooiii¡¯mmm suuuurrryy . .¡± came out of the creature¡¯s mouth, as if it expected Amy to be able to understand it¡¯s bizarre language. Curious, she leaned forward and sniffed the creature¡¯s nose-like bump. She winced as the creature let out another bizarre sound. God, breath mint much? Gross! Amy was going to have to bathe herself for a week straight to get rid of that grotesque stench!

¡°Oooii¡¯lllll fffiiiieeexxx yyuuuuuu . .¡± It said again, and Amy crawled back down the creater¡¯s leg-thing. She would rather risk falling to the ground and meeting her inevidable death that have to experience that raunchy breath again!

To Amy¡¯s relief, the creature gripped her around the middle again and placed her back in her cage.

Amy wished the creature would have at least stayed nearby so she would have something strange to look at, but alas, she was all alone. Nothing left to do now but daydream.

Within her imagination, Amy was skipping through vast fields of cheese. The road was made of cheese, the trees were made of cheese, and even the grass was shredded cheese. There was every possible kind of cheese you could imagine there, from cheddar to goat cheese. Not that she liked goat cheese, but it was a cheese valley and just in case she ever wanted to even look at goat cheese, she could. The warm aromas seeped deep into her nostrils, acting like a drug to her brain. It washed through her little body and warmed her insides until she found herself drifting . .

Amy crawled underneath her running wheel and dozed, her daydream of the cheese valley becoming her dream for real. So this was what heaven was like.

As if waking up from a long dream, Amy slowly blinked her eyes. ¡°W- where am I?¡± She asked quizzically. She moved her stiff neck over to the right and glanced at her friend Willow. Willow¡¯s face suddenly lit up like a Christmas tree, and she leaped into the air. ¡°Yes!!¡± She squealed in happiness, and embraced Amy in a squeeze so tight that made her gasp for air.

¡°Okay, hi Willow, um, don¡¯t take this the wrong way, but- Are you on something?¡±

Willow sat back, seeming to regard Amy with confusion. Suddenly, the confused look went away, replaced with a look of slight superiority and calmness.

¡°Nope. Everything is- great. I think I¡¯m finally a witch!¡±

¡°Um, that¡¯s great, Willow.¡± Amy replied, half sarcastically. Not that she wasn¡¯t happy for her friend, but she had no idea what she was talking about.

¡°Did I fall asleep here or something?¡± Willow smiled.

¡°Yeah, you were asleep for a long time. I was trying to wake you, but I just couldn¡¯t do it. Until now.¡± Willow hugged her again, and Amy didn¡¯t know what to do. She tried to remember why she had been over here, but her mind was drawing a blank. She couldn¡¯t remember where she had been . . .

¡°Well, I think I should go home. My mind apparently fully awake yet.¡± Willow frowned.

¡°No! I mean- you should stay here. We can, do a spell together!¡± For some reason, a spell didn¡¯t sound very good to Amy. Something in the back of her mind was leery of the idea.

¡°I think I¡¯m sort of tapped out, spell-wise. Besides, I¡¯m sure I still have homework to do. I should get my grades up before graduation.¡± Suddenly, Willow¡¯s face became dark.

¡°Graduation . . um, Amy? When I said you¡¯d been sleeping, you were sleeping for a long time. I mean, a really long time.¡±

Something about what Willow had just said hit Amy hard, but she couldn¡¯t figure out in her mind exactly why. ¡°How long?¡±

Willow fidgeted, trying to stall answering Amy¡¯s demand. ¡°Well, um . .¡±

¡°What day is it?¡± Amy suddenly blurted out, her heart seemingly slowing with dread. Oh God, what had happened to her?

Willow looked at her feet. ¡°Well, it¡¯s December, 2001.¡±

Amy nearly burst out laughing, but something inside of her was screaming at her mind, telling her that it was the truth. She known it all along.

¡°Oh god. Did-¡° She gulped, fear, gripping her insides and twisting them into silent submission. ¡°Did my Mother do this? Is she back?¡±

¡°NO!¡± Willow practically screamed into Amy¡¯s ear. ¡°No. It was-¡° She was still holding something back, Amy could tell. ¡°It was something else.¡±

Amy closed her eyes and tried to control her labored breathing. ¡®Okay, calm down.¡¯ She tried to tell herself. ¡®It¡¯s not my mother. My mother¡¯s in hell. My mother¡¯s gone forever. She can¡¯t hurt me.¡¯

A strange image suddenly floated into Amy¡¯s mind as she was trying to escape her much too frightening reality. It was a field . .of cheese? For some unknown reason, the aroma filled her nose and calmed her a great deal. She opened her eyes, silently agreeing with Willow not to tell her any more. Not yet. Not until she fulfilled her craving.

¡°Willow, do you have any cheese?¡±
