Cordelia made no effort to hide her emmensely irritated groan about the music Gunn was choosing to play in the office. It’s not that she hated rap, okay, actually it was. She hated this music with a passion beyond belief. “Gunn, you’re driving me up the wall! Turn it OFF!” She yelled.
“’Ey! I’m just expressin’ the fact that I have just as many rights as an employee here that you do. If you want me to not destroy your upbeat, teenybopper boy-band gay-type CD’s that you bring in, we’re going to even things out. Heirgo, my music gets it’s fair share of playin’ too.” Cordelia threw up her hands.
“Why do I even bother?”
“Because you just can’t get enough of the Backstreet Boys touchin’ each other’s bums and wearing their hats in that backwards, pretty-boy rebellious way.”
“They do NOT touch each other’s butts!” Gun laughed.
“Man, and you wonder why we’re not getting’ any buisness.” Cordelia opened up her mouth to respond again, but she stopped herself before the next comeback flew out. With Gunn, there was no such thing as winning.
Suddenly, the door burst open and a slender girl stood her ground in the doorway. A light regenerated itself on Cordelia’s face, a ray of hope that maybe someone needed help, and hopefully it would be someone who could afford to pay. Before she got into her speech, Gunn leapt up from his chair.
“Lanette?” He said with a deep, sad concern in his voice that brought on pangs of jealousy to Cordelia’s heart.
“It’s me, Gunn.” She said calmly, almost with a cold, scorned tone. That made Cordy feel at least a tinge better. He got up from his chair and slowly approached her, as if he feared she’d run away at his advance. When she still stood his ground, he leaned down and gave her a gentle hug. Cordelia put her hands on her hips.
“Okay, who’s “me?” She demanded, breaking up the silence of this tender moment. Gunn looked over his shoulder.
“This is Lanette.” Gunn explained. “She was Alana’s best friend.” A huge weight lifted itself from Cordelia’s suspicious shoulders.
“Oh!” She briskly walked over to them. “Nice to meet you! I’m Cordelia Chase, and this is our buisness. It’s currently called Angel Investigations, but we’re changing that soon. Our former boss recently grew a big stick that somehow got shoved right up his rear end, so we’re not too keen on keeping the name.” The girl’s eyes widened with surprise and confusion, but she nodded out of politeness.
“Okay.” Gunn stepped back, the look of happiness slowly fading into concern.
“So, what are you doing around here?” He asked.
“You left.” She simply stated, not offering any more details but eyeing Gunn with sadness. He fidgetted, not exactly sure how to respond.
“I didn’t leave, I just, shifted. I’m still fightin’ the fight. Like always.”
“TJ’s gone now, too. and Jake, and Merjan. All just last week.” Gunn’s eyes visibly darkened with surprise and grief.
“Vampires?”
“No. They weren’t vampires. People. Just regular people.” Cordelia stammered at that last comment.
“No, it can’t just be regular people. There has to be a catch.” She said, more out of selfish hoping than real intuition.
“There were, rich people.” She stumbled, and Gunn briskly grabbed unto her arm and led her to the chair.
“Cordelia, can you get her some water?” He said, more telling her than asking. She nodded and dissapeared.
“Tell me what happened.” She shifted, refusing to meet Gunn’s eyes.
“O-okay. There was these two vampires, girls, who had burn scars all over themselves. They were trying to eat TJ, they took him down in the sewer so Merjan and Jake started wailin’ on them but then this human came along, Merjan said he was human. And they,” She paused, as if gathering strengh to say the final pharase. “They killed them. Merjan made it back to us, but he was hurt and there was nothing we could do.” She sniffed, bravely holding back tears. “He died in Kenny’s arms.”
Gunn put his head in his hands, trying not to fall apart in front of Lanette. He let out a deep breath that took place of the tears he wanted to cry for his friends.
Cordelia entered to room again, handing the girl a paper cup with some water in it. She put her hand gently on Gunn’s shoulder, trying to comfort him the best she could. She was surprised at how much it hurt her to see him hurting. It was true that her, Gunn and Wesley had become like family, especially after Angel fired them, but maybe there was more to Gunn that just that. Maybe she had real feelings for him, in the romantic sense. Maybe they belonged with each other.
Gunn looked up at Cordelia with sadness and frustration. “Darla and Drusilla. And probably Linsey. They’re all gonna die.” His voice was even, and Cordelia knew that he meant what he said. Every word.
Wesley tossed and turned in his uncomfortable bed, tied up in a tangled nightmare. He was tied up again but a Faith/Drusilla/Darla hybrid, and Angel was there but he wouldn’t help him. He just stood there, shaking his head and keeping his face expressionless. Wesley cried out, begged him, but nothing he said made any difference. Angel was not going to help him. Angel couldn’t even help himself.
While Lanette slept on the dirty couch, Gunn sat next to her faithfully. “I knew those guys. I chilled with ‘em. Fought beside ‘em. Fought for ‘em.” He told Cordelia.
“Gunn, you can’t blame yourself. What happened wasn’t your fault. You know that.”
“Do I? They was right, y’know. I moved on up. Maybe I forgot what it’s like to be them, not fighting for themselves but for the rest of the world. They took ‘em, and I didn’t do anything about it. I didn’t stop Angel when we all knew he got a few degrees colder than the fridge he keeps his blood in.” Cordelia sighed, and dared to wrap her arns around Gunn and rest her head on his broad shoulder.
“You’re Gunn, and you’ve always done your best. You’ve done more than one man’s work. You are the most noble, un-selfish guy I know.” She took a deep breath. “Any anyone who has you in their life is lucky beyond belief.” Gunn glanced down at her.
“Lucky, huh. Yeah, they was real lucky. Lucky enough to end up dead.” Cordy raised her head.
“Hey! That is NOT your fault! Look at everything you’ve done! Look at how many people you’ve saved. Look at . .” She hesitated. “Look at me.”
Gunn froze. He was about to respond sarcastically when her words finally sunk in. “I never saved you.” He said to her quietly.
“Yes, you did.” She whispered, looking into his deep chocolate eyes. “You don’t realize how much you saved me.”
Suddenly, the door burst open and Cordy and Gunn jumped to their feet. It was Angel. No wait, it wasn’t. This was the thing that Angel had become. “Where are they?” He demanded.
“Where’s WHO?” Cordelia said, angry and irritated.
“I’m only going to ask you this one more time. Where are they?” Suddenly, Angel fell flat onto his face. “Oof!?” He said, as Darla stood directly behind him.
“That’s right lover, do what you can to find me. You’ve always wanted me. You can’t escape from me. You’re Mine.” Angel breathed, but didn’t even make an attempt to get back to his feet. Darla grinned with triumph, in so many ways.
“Let’s see, Angel. These people, who you care about? They’re not going to be around much longer.” She eyed Cordelia, knowing her superiority was striking fear and dread into their little human hearts.
“How about you, pretty one?” She slowly advanced on her, but Gunn rushed in front of Cordy to protect her.
“You’re not gonna touch her.” Darla tilted her head with amusement.
“Yes, I am. And I’m going to eat . .her . .up.” Gunn refused to budge, locking his vengeful gaze right into her dark, devilish eyes.
“You’ll have to go through me first.” She laughed.
“Not a problem.” She leapt upon him, and he immidiately delt a stinging blow to her face. Lanette stood up and began shreaking, quickly scurrying to the corner of the office. Cordy glanced back at her with desperation.
Finally, Angel pushed himself to his feet. As Darla leaned forward to try and take Gunn down, He rushed underneith her and heaved her over his shoulder. Fractions of a second later, he threw her out the door. Angel looked behind himself in disbeleif. “Get out.” Gunn said sternly. “And take her with you.” Without another word, Angel briskly ran out.
Darla looked at him and again at Gunn, and made her decision. Just as she thought that Angel was tied to her, she was tied to him. She chose to chase him instead. Cordelia took in a deep breath and ran into Gunn’s arms. “You see, Gunn? You saved me.”
Gunn closed his eyes, taking in her alive and vitalizing scent. “Yeah, I guess I did.”
