Padmé's Dying Wish

The warm sunshine of Alderaan filled Padmé's room as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Bail Organa stood in a hallway. They made sure that they were always quiet around Padmé's room due to her progressing illness and the sleeping of her children.

"Do we have any clue as to what is making her sicker?" Bail asked.
"No. It's something that I or anyone has ever seen before."
     "Have you told her?"
     "No--"

Bail sighed and walked away. Obi-Wan hasn't told Padmé because she already knows that she is dying. He walked from the hallway to Padmé's room. He entered the sunshine filled room and walked over to Luke and Leia's cribs. They were sleeping peacefully. While looking at them, he felt their strong presence in the Force. He knew right then that those two children, especially young Luke, would change Anakin back to the Light Side of the Force.

"Obi-Wan..." A soft weak voice said coming from behind him.

He took one last look at Luke and Leia and then looked at the weak and sickly Padmé. He walked over to the side of the bed. She tried several times to sit up, but her weak and fragile body would allow her to. Obi-Wan tried to help her, but she swatted his hand away from her every time. She finally gave up and laid her head back down on her pillow>

"Just relax, Padmé." Obi-Wan whispered, gently touching her face.
"Obi-Wan, please promise me that no matter what my children will be safe."
"I promise. Padmé... you're dying. But you already knew that though."

Padmé didn't say anything. Of course she knew. She knew before she had Luke and Leia that this day was coming. Obi-Wan took her hand and held it. She nodded as tears ran down her face and onto her pillow.

"I know." She whispered, "My only wish is that my sweet precious Anakin be changed back into the person he once was. That sweet little boy that I met on Tatoonie oh so long ago."

She continued to cry. Luke and Leia started to become restless. Obi-Wan could sense the source of their restlessness. They could sense the pain and destruction that their father was causing.

"Your children are special, Padmé." Obi-Wan said looking at the cribs, "Like their father, they are powerful in the Force. The Emperor knows about Luke and Leia. If he finds them... I'm not sure what will happen. All I know is they are a threat to him. We must separate them to keep them safe."

He looked at Padmé again and continued on.

"Padmé, your children, especially Luke, will be the ones to change Anakin back to the Light Side and back to the person we know."

Padmé only nodded. Her precious Anakin changed back was all that she wanted, so that they could be a family. She looked at Obi-Wan and quietly sighed.

"My final moment has arrived." She whispered, "Please bring me Luke and Leia."

Obi-Wan nodded and walked over to the twins' cribs. Bail walked into the room and over to the cribs at the same time. Bail picked up Leia and Obi-Wan picked up Luke. They walked to opposite sides of Padmé's bed. She managed to sit up, but not completely straight. Obi-Wan gently placed Luke into her arms.

She looked at her son. She gently stroked his small face and kissed one of his small hands.

"My precious son," She whispered, "you are going with Obi-Wan to Tatoonie to live with your father's brother and sister-in-law. I hope that one day when you get older you will find out who I am. Always remember that I love you."

She touched his face again and kissed his small forehead. She gently placed him into Obi-Wan outreached arms. Then, Bail placed Leia into Padmé's arms. Padmé began to look very sick and pale.

She looked at her daughter. She touched her small face and kissed one of her small hands.

"My lovely daughter," She whispered, "you will be staying here with Bail and become his adopted daughter. I pray for the day that you and your brother are reunited and turn you father back to the way he once was. Remember that I will always love you."

She touched Leia's face again and kissed her small forehead. She gently placed Leia into Bail's outreached arms. She slid back down on the bed, covered up with a couple of blankets, and laid her head on her pillow. She closed her eyes and tried to fall to sleep. Her breathing began to get shallow. Then, it got shallower and shallower. Bail and Obi-Wan stood there and watched her life drain from her body with the rise and fall of her chest.

"I love you, my sweet Anakin." She whispered, with her final breath.

Well into the night, Bail and Obi-Wan stood beside the bed that Padmé's deceased body laid. Obi-Wan looked at Luke and Bail looked at Leia. And then, Bail finally understood. Obi-Wan was right. Luke and Leia were special and were going to be the ones to change Anakin back to the Light Side of the Force.
