Most of the information used for this family was taken from the internet, a book by Anitra Rustemeyer Streett called Wainscott (Winscott) Family of Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky and personal help through email contact with family members. Since the family used several spellings of Wainscott through the years, there is some confusion of their early history. There seems to have been several who settled in the same area with the same names, and tracing the right family can be challenging. For our family, however, we will start with Richard who was born in 1711 at St. George, Southwork, Surry, England. Richard arrived at St. Mary's County, Maryland, around 1728 and was bound out to a John Taylor for seven years to repay for his passage. In 1735, he married Elizabeth Mary Woolum, and although she too was from St. George, records show that they were married in Augusta County, Virginia where their first six children were born. They then moved to North Carolina sometime before their seventh child, Solomon, was born in 1753. We don't know for sure when Richard or Elizabeth died, but we do know they are died in Rowan County, North Carolina.
Our first connection for this family is through Isaac, Jr's oldest son, Andrew, who was the father of Mary Wainscott Gardner. Andrew was born in Gallatin County, Kentucky in 1807, the eldest of nine children. Andrew had two sons who served in the Civil War. John W. Wainscott enlisted in the Union Army, 6th Tennessee Calvary, Company L on July 24, 1862, and was later considered a deserter. He is listed on the 1890 Weakley County Veterans Schedule, #001 Ed 226. Isaac Wainscott served in the Tennessee Volunteer Calvary, 6th Regiment, Company L. He enlisted June 5, 1862 and was discharged July 26, 1865, at Pulaski, Tennessee, as a corporal. Before enlisting, he was a farmer. Later he filed for pension benefits and was assigned number #1074067 (file #XC-2,532,225).
The 1870 census shows that Andrew and Rebecca were still farming in Weakley County while in their 60's. Also living with them at that time was a 27 year old named Caroline (probably their daughter Margaret) and their son, Andrew Clark. Rebecca died in 1876, and Andrew (age 73) along with Margaret (age 36), are listed in the 1880 census living with Andrew Clark and his family. Andrew and Rebecca are buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Weakley County. Their sons, Isaac and Andrew Clark, and some of their children are buried in Tansil Cemetery along with other members of the Wainscott family
