Madine's early backstory stated that he was an Imperial deserter. Dark Forces established that he warned the Rebels about the Dark Trooper project and was captured, only to be rescued by Kyle Katarn. Then came Darksaber which stated that Madine led a Commando squad that deserted while on a mission. Later Rogue Squadron 3-D had a mission in which you rescued Madine from Corellia. The way that this was eventually put together was that Madine leaked the Dark Trooper info, then his squad deserted, but he was captured, then resuced by Kyle Katarn and brought to Corellia, which the Empire attacked in order to get him back. Pretty complicated if you ask me.
