Rumor has it that Avery Brooks had wanted to shave his head since DS9 started, but was told by producers that they only wanted one bald captain on television. I'm not making that one up. In an effort to toughen his look, he grew a goatee late in Season 3, which was first technically seen in Explorers but is very obviously a fake. His real beard showed up during the next episode. Why they couldn't wait, I have no idea. Of course, I also have no idea why the same make-up crew that could bring us Cardssians, Ferengi, Borg and Klingons couldn't make a simple beard look right!
