This ship, along with a few other ship designs, were first introduced prior to the movie era, in the very detailed Starfleet Technical Manuel. The book is truely excellent, and flushed out the entire Star Trek universe at the time. Unfortunatly the author had a falling out with Gene Rodenberry, and now is no longer considered cannon. The entire nature, background, and technology of the Federation depicted in the book had been altered, mostly severely over the years, and some rules have even been established for the Star Trek Universe that specifically cancel out the info in the book - such that warp drives must be in pairs. Of course, a few ships have been shown since that totally break the rule, but oh well.
