Notice "Tie" spelled in lower case. That's cause at one point those letters didn't stand for anything. Just as X and Y wings are named for wing configuration, the model makers called them Tie fighters cause they looked like bow ties. Anyways, when Kenner made it's toy Tie Fighter it was white with shorter wings. The toys were usually used as reference models for the comic artists back then, as there was no such thing as a VCR. Consequently most vehicles looked real odd. the The Fighter was white in almost all early comics, and usually had the battery compartment too!
