Apearing only in the novelization, originally Luke and the rest of his squadron were actually blue, not red. They would have been in the movie too, only due to the blue screen technology of the time, we would have seen right through the markings, forcing Lucas to change the color scheme. In fact, R2's panels are black in the pre-Special Edition versions of all three films.
