Unto Us a Child is Born

This infamous episode begins at a shopping mall. A pregnant woman named Nancy Salvo admires a mother with her child. She bumps into a worker at the mall and walks on. Nancy goes into a clothing store and decides to try on a dress that would go with her pregnancy. She heads into the fitting room to try it on. In the ventilation room of the mall, we discover that the worker is a part of an alien triad sent to test a new chemical weapon out at the mall. If it kills as many people as the Advocacy estimates, the aliens could use this on a much wider scale. However, the aliens plans are botched after dropping some of the oil. To risk being discovered, one of the aliens tells his comrades that they cannot risk being discovered. A security guard notices the leak coming from above and heads to the ventilation room to check it out. The aliens flee and one of the aliens stays behind the other two- in order to destroy their evidence. The two aliens don't wait up for their comrade as the other alien is being chased around the mall by guards. The alien makes his way into the same store Nancy is at. He quickly heads to the fitting room and possesses her body.

Exiting the fitting room, the possessed Nancy begins to feel strangely and immediately goes into labor. The other two aliens see this and know something very wrong is going on. At the Cottage, Norton tells Ironhorse and Harrison of an alien transmission three hundred miles away. And from the pattern it looks like a distress signal. At Valley Hospital, Nancy is taken in on a gurney- as she howls in pain. The doctor tells a nurse that he picked up a triple heart beat on the fetal monitor. Mr. Salvo is not allowed to be with Nancy as she gives birth and he paces around the waiting room. The other two aliens with Nancy are also in the waiting room. A nurse informs Mr. Salvo that his child is a son and overcome with joy, Mr. Salvo hands cigars to the aliens in celebration. Not understanding the gesture, the aliens throw the cigars away. Later on, as he goes to see Nancy in the recovery room- Mr. Salvo is killed by the aliens who mutilate him while a weak Nancy looks on. Guided by Norton, the team discover the transmissions came from the hospital.

Ironhorse and Harrison tell the administrator of the hospital that they were guided by transmissions and that their hospital could be harboring known terrorists. The administrator lets them look around. Ironhorse tells Harrison they can't use a Geiger Counter because of the radiation in the hospital. Harrison is insistent on seeing the most recent patient and a nurse shows them Nancy Salvo's room- and to her horror along with Ironhorse and Harrison- they discover the mauled corpse of Mr. Salvo.

Harrison says that the administrator is unhappy but the team will proceed as quietly as they can. He also says that the baby should be isolated because it could be a target. The same thing that killed Mr. Salvo could try to kill the baby. Norton picks up another transmission by the aliens and tells them that this is not over. The coordinates of the transmission are the same as before. Suzanne arrives and decides to do some testing on the baby. The aliens contact the Advocacy and tell them they are not at full strength. They tell the Advocates one of their comrades escaped into the body of a pregnant human female, the human gave birth and is in a weakened condition. She is too weak now to get a new body. The Advocacy are more concerned about what has become of the offspring. The aliens tell the Advocates it remains in the hospital. The Advocacy say if the child is a hybrid, the key to its survival could also be the key to their survival. They order their soldiers to bring the child to them. Suzanne informs Harrison that the Salvo baby has undergone a blending of both alien and human cells- and apparently the two cells are compatible. Harrison surmises that the baby is a half-breed. Going to check on the baby, Harrison and Suzanne are floored to see the baby grown into a youngster.

Harrison theorizes that the child's development could deal with the aliens growth rate cycle. Harrison speculates that the aliens mature rapidly and reach maturity hours after birth. Norton is asked by Harrison to check Suzanne's reports on alien birth growth rate and how it may apply to humans. Norton informs Harrison about the police report of an alien corpse at the mall- near the hospital. Harrison pieces together everything that has happened. Nancy demands that her comrades bring her along to get the child. She says they have no authority to question a direct order of the Advocacy. The aliens agree that the must remain united as three. Using a stolen ambulance, they sneak into the hospital by bringing Nancy in on a stretcher. A nurse recognizes Nancy and the administrator informs Ironhorse of this. Nancy begins to feel the presence of her child as the child begins to feel Nancy's presence. And the child had something moving under his shirt- like an arm. As he realized Nancy's presence, his alien side began to emerge. A nurse goes to the child's room, but she is thrown to the ground by the baby and it rips off her legs and kills her.

Harrison and Suzanne come across the nurse's hideous remains and Harrison realizes that the baby has left. It's on the loose. Ironhorse's soldiers guard the hospital. Sgt. Coleman tells Ironhorse they are ready to start a room for room search. One of Ironhorse's men named Lange notices something. He digs his hand around in a bin- only to have his thumb bitten off and the mutant baby mauls him. Another nurse is called into an empty room- and she is pulled in there by the aliens. Nancy tries to beat her into giving the information about the child's whereabouts but another alien retrieves the information by sticking his fingers through her temple. They find out the baby is isolated and proceed. Nancy feels the baby again as the baby calls out to her at the same time. Nancy abandons her comrades for the elevator. Harrison and Suzanne see Lange's corpse and are revolted at the brutality of his death. Nancy makes her way to the stairwell to and reunites with her child. Nancy tells her child they will be one again. She plans to reabsorb the child to gain back her strength. Her comrades tell her the baby belongs to the Advocacy. Nancy tells them that "this bastard offspring must be sacrificed in order to make me whole again". Her comrades kill her and the hybrid baby is outraged and saddened at his mother's death.

Ironhorse notices the noises coming from the stairwell. Coleman and Ironhorse shoot the two pursuing aliens as the hybrid child runs away. Harrison, Ironhorse and Suzanne hunt for the mutant. The child jumps on Harrison and attacks him. Harrison kicks the child hard in the abdomen. The child howls and Suzanne notices that the baby has aged one hundred years in just one day. The body begins to die as we see the remains of an alien corpse. Underneath that corpse, is a regular human newborn. Suzanne says that the child is a human and has no alien DNA in him whatsoever. The child is given to its grandparents and the team think of what caused the baby to become human again. Harrison believes that when Nancy Salvo died, the alien part of the child died as well. In the grandparents car, we see the grandmother turn to baby and say, "To life immortal" in alien. The grandfather says, "To life immortal" as well. The aliens not only have outsmarted the team but have possession of the child.

COMMENTS: This was probably the most controversial episode of WOTW. Everyone who knows the show at least remembers this episode. Many people criticized the gore in this installment and this was without a doubt the goriest episode of the show ever- but I think that this show was certainly not bad. It wasn't great- it was a little thin plot-wise, but it had plenty food for thought. The team didn't have much to do, but the real focus of this outing seems to be towards the aliens. I found the whole relationship between Nancy and her child oddly touching. Was Nancy reabsorbing the child only for her strength or was she protecting the child from being handed over to the Advocacy? Nancy and her child had a gripping bond and it was interesting to watch. I wonder if Nancy went against the Advocacy's orders because she was mentally unstable following the delivery or if she was becoming an individual. The other soldiers and scientists seem to be like fanatics regarding their loyality to the Advocates- so that was a startling shock. It was also a treat to see Homicide: Life on the Street actor, Clark Johnson, as the alien who possessed Nancy Salvo. Amber-Lea Weston deserves special credit as Nancy Salvo. She did an excellent job of showing Nancy's fragility and in a strange way- love for her child.
