My Soul To Keep

At the aliens cavern, we see four alien eggs. Advocate Xana says with sadness, "They are dying." Advocate Oshar then adds, "And our future dies with them. This cannot be." Xana asks why is this happening. One of the alien workers tells her it's due to the heat of the cavern's radiation- left over from human atomic bomb tests. Advocate Horek states that the same radioactivity which is a blessing to them is a curse to their first four children on this planet. Xana laments that the eggs are all dead and they must wait nine more years for mating. Oshar says that the Circle of Life will be broken and that this cannot happen. Then Xana concludes that the eggs must be moved to a safe environment- a place that models the cold temperature on their planet. Horek orders a worker to retrieve the unborn egg. Over the vast abyss of the cavern, Horek holds the egg. "We return thee to Mor-Tax in the name of those who come and those who went before. To life immortal," he says. Xana and Oshar repeat the phrase in unison. Horek throws the egg down into the abyss.

At a Korean Bathhouse in Washington D.C., Suzanne's ex-husband (who is a reporter), Cash McCullough, arrives to meet with an anonymous informant. Hidden in a hooded robe, the informant tells Cash of a shadow government project called the Blackwood Project. He says that it's a four man operation that no one even knows about but goes high- the president of the United States is behind it. The informant cryptically tells Cash that he is the same tipster during the Watergate era. Cash asks the informant if he is Deep Throat and the informant tells Cash that he's asking the wrong questions. He informs Cash that the man writing out the checks for the Project is General Henry Wilson- Cash's ex father-in-law. The informant then adds that Suzanne is a member of this team and the rest of the story Cash has to find out himself. At Intercontinental Ice Limited, the aliens possess the body of a guard at the ice house.

At the Cottage, Norton tells Harrison something weird is happening in the alien transmissions. To him, it sounds like baby talk. Harrison uses his tuning fork for the answer and tells Norton he doesn't have a clue what is going on- much to Norton's displeasure. Norton tells Harrison everytime he thinks he is going insane, he looks at Harrison and knows he's sane. Ironhorse gives Suzanne her mail and she is shocked to discover that Cash is trying to contact her. She mentions to Ironhorse how he hasn't been there for Debi and her. Ironhorse is worried about the security of the team due to Cash and his reputation. She promises she won't talk to Cash about their work and she'll make sure Debi won't say anything either. Ironhorse thanks her for that and requests her to hand a report in after every time she meets Cash for security reasons. Suzanne and Debi see Cash at an ice rink and as Debi skates, Cash and Suzanne talk. It was two years since he last saw them. Suzanne asks Cash what does he want. He assures her nothing- he just wanted to see them. They discuss how things are between them and he reveals to Suzanne that he is tired of being alone. He says people can change and wants to prove that by spending more time with Suzanne and Debi. Thrilled, Debi hugs her mother and father- who she wants to see together again.

At the ice house, the aliens contact the Advocacy. Xana congratulates them saying, "Excellent. In four days we will be many." The aliens assure the Advocates they are in control. Oshar warns the workers that the Circle of Life must not be broken. Within seventy-two hours, the embryos will reach birth. At the Cottage, Debi tells Suzanne she wants to see Cash again and Suzanne tells Debi she'll think about it. Suzanne tells Ironhorse that all her and Cash talked about was family. And how he no longer has any other family except for her and Debi. She admits that she accepted what he said about wanting to change. General Wilson asked Ironhorse for a background check on Cash and Suzanne tells the Colonel that General Wilson and Cash hated each other instantly. She also told Ironhorse that she was going to have dinner with Cash tomorrow. Suzanne tells Ironhorse that although her mind was saying no, her mouth was saying yes. According to her, Cash has always had that effect on her. Ironhorse calls up Stavrakos and tells him he'll need an ear for tomorrow night.

Norton tells Harrison that the aliens are somewhere in the nearby industrial quarter. Ironhorse and Harrison spy at the ice house from afar. Ironhorse tells Harrison about the peculiar heavy security for an ice house and that the guards have rotting skin. He says that Omega Squad will button the area off and Harrison and him are going on a recon patrol. Harrison and Ironhorse are at the Cottage trying to figure out the reason why the aliens need this ice house. Harrison speculates that from what they know of the alien home planet from Quinn it's possible that the aliens are trying to replicate the colder conditions back on Mor-Tax. Suzanne walks in, dressed for her dinner with Cash and Harrison and Ironhorse are momentarily shell-shocked. "You look terrific," Ironhorse stammers. "You're a knock-out," Harrison adds. Suzanne thanks them and Harrison assures her things with the aliens are under control. Ironhorse says that they have unknown enemy plan, but they're going to sneak inside to figure out what's going on and then they'll destroy the aliens.

Cash and Suzanne are having dinner at a restaurant and he tells Suzanne that Debi has mentioned that she hopes that Cash get back together again with Suzannne. Cash asks Suzanne what does she think about that. She tells him in the five years they've been divorced, she isn't sorry for the divorce. She says that Debi and her needed him and he wasn't there. Cash begins to ask Suzanne about her involvement with the killings of illegal aliens. Confused, Suzanne asks him what is he talking about. He tells her about the Blackwood Project and the Cottage and that it all goes back to Dr. Harrison Blackwood and his merry band of killers. He says that this is all a euphemism for death squads and Suzanne is being used. He promises to go public within 48 hours. She realizes that he has been lying to her again. She tells him, "You're the kind of bastard who makes the case for divorce not enough. The only thing important to you is you." He tells her he will get that story and she throws her drink in his face telling him to go to hell. She storms out of the restaurant. Meanwhile, Harrison and Ironhorse are disguised as homeless men and they sneak inside the ice house and come across the eggs. Harrison says that he wants one of the eggs and he steals one- although Ironhorse would prefer it that he doesn't. As Suzanne makes her way back to the Cottage, Cash is snapping pics of her from a distance.

In the lab, the team examines and theorizes about the egg. Suzanne tells Ironhorse about what happened at dinner. Ironhorse admits to her that he already knew because he had her table bugged. The team conclude that what they have is an alien fetus and Harrison says there were thousands of them in the ice house. Cash returns to the Bathhouse to meet the informant. Cash tells the tipster that no one will publish or broadcast the story without hard evidence. The informant promises to find a way for Cash and his men to get the videotaped proof. Before leaving, Cash asks why did he give information during the Watergate scandal. The informant says that one term of Nixon was enough but two was impossible. He also says that he wants to get back at General Wilson personally because it goes back to an issue of the same mistress. He encourages Cash to, "Nail his butt to the wall." Cash tells him it will be his pleasure. He leaves and the informant takes off his hood. The tipster is Quinn.

"Is there no degradation too great? No sense of morale present on this damned planet?!" spews a livid Xana to the workers via communication. "But we took every precaution possible, Advocate," the worker tries to assure her. She counters back by asking how such an outrage could occur. The workers say that they do not know and Xana replies, "You idiots, it is clear what has happened." Oshar continues, "Only humans would dare steal one of our first born." The Advocacy tell the workers that since they cannot move the eggs now, they must protect the eggs with their lives. The future of their species depends on it. "These humans are treacherous," Oshar remarks. Horek chimes in, "We'll do a good service for the entire universe by killing each one of these revolting human beings." "Death to all humans!" Xana proclaims. The egg begins to hatch after responding somewhat to the alien transmission. Suzanne tells Norton to get Harrison and Ironhorse. As she says that, she sees the egg hatching, and the baby alien inside.

Suzanne tries to look at the egg but her hands are grabbed by the young alien. Ironhorse quickly responds to this by burning the alien egg. Then the Colonel says that they will attack the ice house at night. The aliens say that the Circle of Life is nearly complete and tomorrow the newborns will walk their new home planet, Earth. The Omega Squad attacks the alien guards outside the ice house. The demolition squad bursts through the alien security. Gunfire ensues between them and the aliens. Suzanne notices Cash and two members of his camera crew entering the ice house. She runs to stop them. Inside, they witness the dead human and alien bodies. Ironhorse reacts with rage after noticing Cash has arrived with his cameramen. Suzanne is attacked by an alien and about to be appropriated- however, Cash saves her but the alien grabs him and throttles him. Ironhorse then shoots the alien and saves Cash. He shows Cash the "illegal aliens". Cash and Suzanne walk back and react in horror after seeing the cameramen's mangled remains. Omega Squad burst through the remaining security and kill the alien workers and use flamethrowers to torch every alien egg. "Now you know," Suzanne tells Cash. "I don't know anything anymore." Cash admits that there is no story, no one would believe him- he doesn't even believe it.

COMMENTS: A good episode written by Jon Kubichan and the direction by William Fruet was superb. I enjoyed discovering facts about the aliens mating habits. Everything these aliens do is in three (3x3=9 years for mating). And I enjoyed the detail of the baby alien. It was a treat to see Quinn again and he is still a thorn in the sides of the Blackwood team and the aliens. I wonder if that abyss in the alien cavern leads back to Mor-Tax or something. Is it some sort of gateway? Horek threw the unborn egg into the abyss saying it was being returned to Mor-Tax. However, the Commander also jumped into this abyss and was killed. So, exactly what is that abyss? I'd be open to any theories regarding it. Nice to see Lynda Mason Green take center stage as Suzanne and I admired Suzanne's strength and courage in this outing. I think Suzanne was one of the best female characters in the sci-fi genre because of how the show didn't stereotype her. She was definitely an excellent character. And the chemistry between Lynda and Jared and Richard was great. Nice to see Ironhorse flustered for once.
