Eye For An Eye

Bikers following a hearse arrive in the town of Grover's Mill, New Jersey. They tell the police officers that they are here simply to bury their friend and pay their respects and leave. The town of Grover's Mill is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the infamous War of the Worlds broadcast by Orson Welles. The town is honoring the anniversary with a fair. The bikers meanwhile head into town and instead of burying their friend, use some form of a metal detector. We learn these bikers are aliens sent by the Advocacy to retrieve a buried War Machine that they intend to restore to functioning capacity and that will lead to victory.

General Wilson has informed the team that there was actually an alien invasion in Grover's Mill in 1938. It was according to the General, the first documented account of a battle against the aliens. The team interview a group of people who fought in the 1938 battle. They said many people didn't remember what happened but they did. One of the veterans from 1938- Flannery- isn't there yet since he is still at his home getting dressed. When he looks out the window he notices a group of alien bikers eating his prized roses. He runs and tells the Ironhorse, Harrison, and his friends that the "Martians are back" because he saw them eat the roses back in 1938. His friends laugh at him- particularly his friend, Harv. In Harrison's interviews, he talks to a Miss Daly who tells him that Orson Welles was a "patriot" who lied about the battle for his country.

The aliens discover the ship but discover that it is not operational. They report this difficulty to the Advocacy, who are annoyed that their underlings are incapable of thinking for themselves. But they remember that they have to think for their kind. They advise them to make sure the death ray is still operational. The aliens test it out, and the death ray is still functional.

Flannery is determined to get proof about the aliens so he goes to the cemetery where the aliens are at. Harv decides to go too since he finds it all amusing. However, Harv is possessed by the aliens while Flannery makes his way back. The aliens thanks to the counsel of the Advocacy decide to transport the death ray on top of the hearse. Flannery tells the team that he's worried that the aliens may have Harv. Ironhorse goes to the cemetery and notices the aliens mounting the death ray on top of the hearse. Harv arrives and tells Flannery that nothing is wrong. He overhears the team's plan to stop the aliens, and Harv reports it back to the others at the cemetery. They decide to eliminate those standing in their way.

Norton and Harrison build a parabolic mirror, as Flannery notices Harv eating some roses. Flannery and the other veterans take Harv hostage and bring him to Harrison. Although Harrison attempts for a truce in his questions to Harv, Harv merely responds that there is no dialogue between the two species. Following that, Harv tries to escape which leads Flannery to shoot him. Ironhorse diverts the aliens attention and they pursue him and as the death ray fires, the ray hits the parabolic mirror, and reflects back to the aliens- killing them. Ironhorse congratulate the veterans for the work they did. Flannery mourns the loss of his friend but is glad they stopped the threat.

COMMENTS: Another episode penned by Tom Lazarus, this episode has some conspiracy theories that would make Chris Carter take notes. The idea of the 1938 broadcast being a disinformation campaign to cover-up the actual battle is a refreshing and intriguing spin on the broadcast. It adds a nice bit of tapestry to the backbone of the series. This episode was a lighter episode with the team enjoying a mini-vacation at Grover's Mill. Jeff Corey- an acting mentor of Jared Martin's- was wonderful as the stubborn but proud and determined, Flannery.
