The opposite number of the American M3 Half-Track, the Hanomag 251 half-track was a superior vehicle in most aspects. With superior sloped armor and a better turning radius, the 251 became the standard armored personnel carrier of Panzer-Grenadier motorized infantry units. Numerous variants of the Hanomag 251 existed, just as there were numerous variants of the M3. The Sd Kfz 241/1 Nebelwerfer was an inexpensive self-propelled artillery battery that fired 23cm rockets; the Sd Kfz 251/6 Kommandopanzerwagen was a command vehicle for armored formations; the Sd Kfz 251/10 was a common platoon-commander vehicle with an obsolescent 37mm PaK L/45 mounted in place of the machine gun; the Sd Kfz 251/7 was an engineer vehicle complete with small assault bridges, demolition equipment, inflatable rubber rafts, and other assorted bits of engineer paraphanalia; and the Sd Kfz 251/9 Ausf D was a self-propelled gun chassis carrying a limited-traverse snubnosed 75mm L/24. |

Even though late-war Western Front Allied tanks paled in comparison with Panzers, the Allies had total air superiority and the P-47 Thunderbolt (familiarly known as the "Juggernaut" or "Jug") heavy fighter/bomber was considered more dangerous than M4A3 Shermans. To protect Germany's dwindling armor reserves, stopgap retrofits of aging Panzer IVs were put into play to act as a semblance of anti-air support. The Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind (Whirlwind) was one of these designs, intended to supplement the Flakpanzer IV Möbelwagen. Armed with quad fire-linked 20mm FlaK 38 L/55 autocannon in a hand-traversed open-topped turret, the Flakpanzer was a mediocre air-defense tank that was quickly replaced by the Flakpanzer IV Ostwind ("East Wind") in late 1944. A total of 84 were built in the period between its inception in June and end of production of November in 1944. |
