The weakest link in the Red Army's order of battle, Russian light tanks were generally no better than their opposite numbers in the Wehrmacht (Panzer IIs).

A new Russian light tank based on the T-40 amphibious vehicle, the T-60 was the Red Army's primary reconnaissance tank. Later upgraded to the T-70, both vehicles were retired from service in late 1943 and their reconnaissance roles filled by American half-tracks and armored cars. 8,000 vehicles were built between 1941 and 1943, and those that remained after all Russian light tanks were withdrawn from service were converted into self-propelled guns, especially the SU-76. |
