OVERVIEW
The TME-113 Smaug was an experiment on the part of TME Industries' Advanced Weapons Technology Design Bureau (AWTDB). The AWTDB, simply for the sake of knowledge, decided to design an assault-class Land-Air 'Mech to see if it was technologically and militarily feasible. The end result was the Smaug, the heaviest land-air conversion BattleMech ever.
CAPABILITIES
The Smaug suffered the usual fate of LAMs in that is is too slow for an assault aerospace fighter and too poorly armed and armored for an assault BattleMech. However, when in Air-Mech mode, it is a highly maneuverable weapons platform that can bring a respectable number of heavy weapons to bear much faster than any heavy- or assault-class 'Mech could ever hope to. Given an intelligent and capable MechWarrior, the Smaug can use its superior mobility to its advantage against opponents even a half of its mass.
The Smaug's arsenal is centered around a heavy rapid-fire autocannon on a inclination mount deep in the left shoulder. This weapon matches the firepower of a standard heavy autocannon but, with superior range, it easily outclasses a standard autocannon. Long- and medium- missile ten-racks in the hips supplements the autocannon's firepower while twin standard and pulse medium lasers give it a close-range punch.
The Smaug only has about four-fifths the armor of a comparable assault 'Mech, the Atlas, but is 33% faster in 'Mech mode and 400% faster in Air-'Mech mode. The AWTDB considers this a more than equitable trade-off, considering that the Smaug's firepower is such that it could easily defeat any flanked opponent. In several trial combats versus Daishi, Atlas, and Grand Titan assault 'Mechs, it was shown that strafing passes combined with use of cover allowed the Smaug to win the day in one-on-one combats. However, assault-class units with medium and heavy support are more difficult foes and not suggested targets.
DEPLOYMENT AND VARIANTS
The TME-113 is popular with heavy recon units, faring much better than the laughable Charger. Typical field modifications usually strip out the medium pulse lasers in exchange for more standard medium lasers and more autocannon ammunition.
